The Boston Red Sox's offense may finally be coming around — Willson Contreras netted American League Player of the Week honors for his standout performance at the plate last week and Boston on Wednesday put eight runs up on the MLB-leading Atlanta Braves. Roman Anthony's return from injury should boost them up further.
Anthony has been sidelined since May 4 with a sprained ligament in his right fourth finger. The Red Sox initially reported that they expected a quick recovery and that Anthony may not need an injured list stint, but nearly a month later, he's only just hitting baseballs.
Anthony will hit off a tee for the first time on May 28. He took 12-15 dry swings on May 26, the most significant jump yet in his swinging progression. Anthony first tried to swing a bat in Kansas City during the Red Sox's May 18-20 road trip, but experienced discomfort so Boston had to table his progress.
Roman Anthony to hit off tee on May 28 for huge step toward Red Sox return
The sophomore has batted .229/.354/.321 through 30 games this season, but he was heating up in the week before his injury, to the tune of a .269/.345/.346 slash line. A healthy, warmed-up Anthony could make all the difference for this offensively struggling Red Sox team.
Red Sox expect Triston Casas to swing soon, continuing recovery from abdominal injury
Triston Casas has been recovering from two different injuries over the last year. The first baseman on May 3, 2025 ruptured the patellar tendon in his left leg while running out a ground ball, and just as his recovery neared its end, he sustained a rib muscle strain while swinging.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy expects Casas to start taking "light" swings this week, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive. The skipper says Casas' knee is okay and he's working exclusively on coming back from his abdominal issue.
Casas' fit on the Red Sox's roster is questionable. Boston added Contreras over the offseason and he's been too excellent to replace at first base, and its designated hitter spot is occupied by a different outfielder every day. Casas still has minor league options on his contract, so the Sox could send him to Triple-A or a different affiliate when he's ready to play.
Patrick Sandoval throws 30-pitch side session, finally nearing Red Sox debut two years since he last played
Patrick Sandoval is also nearing his return to game action as his recovery from UCL surgery he had in June 2024. The Red Sox signed him in December of that year and he's still never appeared in a game with Boston.
According to Smith, Sandoval threw a 30-pitch side session on May 27 and he's expected to throw live batting practice on May 30. Where Sandoval will fit in the Sox's pitching staff is still uncertain, as the rotation is full even with Garrett Crochet on the injured list. He could play a long-relief role, but the bullpen is also packed with depth to spare,
