Amidst the Boston Red Sox march in the second half towards a playoff spot, one of the biggest reasons why has been the play of Roman Anthony. After experiencing a bit of a slow start after he was finally called up to the big leagues in June, Anthony has been amazing over his last 55 games with a .329/.420/.514 line to show for his efforts. Unfortunately, all of that good work is currently in jeopardy.
All was well on Tuesday as the Red Sox jumped all over the Guardians early to take a 5-1 lead. However, after taking an awkward hack in the fourth inning and grabbing at his back/side, Anthony was taken out of the game the next inning.
Roman Anthony is out of the game. Here’s the swing where it looks like he tweaked his back.

Roman Anthony pulled early from Red Sox's matchup against Guardians
Actual details on what is ailing Anthony are light at the moment. We know that he took a big swing and seemed to grab at his lower back area afterwards, although even then it is still unclear from the footage we have. What we do know is that the supposed injury was serious enough to pull him from the game on the spot.
Given the area that seemed to be bothering him, it is worth pointing out that Anthony was scratched about a month ago with tightness in his lower back. One hopes that this development isn't a sign that he is dealing with a long-term, potentially serious injury, but it is hard to ignore the coincidence in this situation.
Once there are more updates from the team and/or broadcast crew as to what is going on with Anthony (or at least what they are willing to share anyways), we'll update this post with that information. Cross your fingers and toes, Red Sox fans, because Anthony and the team need all the good vibes they can get right now.
