Red Sox fans freaking out after Alex Bregman's silly (but serious) social media move

Uh-oh ...

After failing to sign Pete Alonso, the Boston Red Sox absolutely must re-sign Alex Bregman this offseason. This isn't just the opinion of Red Sox fans. Analysts, too, feel that Boston is under immense pressure to bring back Bregman ... or else.

Bregman's pretty much a perfect fit in Boston's clubhouse, just as his righty bat's a perfect fit at Fenway Park. The problem is, Bregman has other suitors, and super-agent Scott Boras will ensure that he gets the best possible deal, even if that contract doesn't come from the Red Sox.

Alex Bregman just abandoned any remaining loyalty to the Red Sox with his new Instagram profile picture

The general feeling fans have gotten from Bregman is that he wants to return to Boston. He's already formed close relationships with the Red Sox's young studs like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. He's been texting all offseason long with manager Alex Cora, per Cora.

Bregman's Instagram profile picture had even remained Red Sox-themed this offseason ... until now. On the morning of Dec. 13, Red Sox fans noticed (with horror) that Bregman had changed his profile pic to a completely neutral image of the third baseman wearing a black outfit devoid of any team loyalties. (And his last Red Sox-centric post was from Sept. 30.) Can't say the responses to the whole thing have been great.

This is far from an accident, nor is it small news that Bregman is essentially communicating his free-agent outlook through IG. New York Yankees fans took equally grave notice when Cody Bellinger likewise changed his profile picture to a neutral image at the end of October.

Bellinger advertising his free agent freedom was no joke: the outfielder remains unsigned by his incumbent squad six weeks after the fact, despite the Yankees themselves advertising how badly they want to re-sign Bellinger.

Was Bregman's own profile picture switch an ominous sign for the Red Sox? Are fans now facing a six-week (or more) waiting period before discovering whether or not a "Bregxit" — in the words of Boras — comes to pass?

Speaking of Boras, he's also Bellinger's agent. Maybe all of this symbolic Instagram gamesmanship comes from his brain. It's not hard to imagine Boras coaching up his players to wipe their socials clean of any team preferences, for leverage purposes.

If Boras is indeed the author of Bregman's new profile pic, perhaps fans can relax a bit. Puppeteering agents have the capacity to do some strange things. We were all reminded recently through the Sonny Gray-Yankees beef that Gray's agent told him to completely pretend to admire the Yankees, even though Gray has always despised them and the entire city of New York (he'll make a great Red Sox player).

Don't worry too much, Red Sox fans. Despite the weird, Matrix-looking new profile pic, Bregman probably still loves Boston. And if the front office takes care of business, there will be no Bregxit.
