The Boston Red Sox are starting to hit their stride. Back-to-back series wins over the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals have their record at 6-9 after a gross 2-8 start.

The bats really came to life in the final two games in St. Louis, and the starting pitching took a turn in the right direction. While they still sit in the basement of the American League East, they are just two games back of the three-way tie at the top.

After the Sox started 2-8, they were the laughing stock of the AL East. Other fans from around the division were all looking down on the Sox after their lofty expectations, especially New York Yankees fans. The Bombers had the opposite start to the Sox at 7-2, and their fans were clowning Red Sox Nation.

But scripts have flipped, and once again, the two ball clubs are headed in opposite directions. Now Boston is headed up while New York is trending straight down. The Sox have won four of their last five. The Yankees, on the other hand, have lost five straight and were just swept by the Tampa Bay Rays, which cost them the lead in the division. The Sox now only find themselves two games back of the Yanks.

Red Sox fans laugh as Yankees go through five-game losing skid, flipping the script on Boston's bad start to the season

It is now Red Sox Nation’s turn to start pointing and laughing, just as the Yankees’ fans did to them. The Yankees lost a series to the Athletics, who went into the Bronx at 3-6. The A’s beat the Yankees 1-0 for the first time since April 1979, and took a series in New York for the first time since 2016. Instead of bouncing back, the Bombers headed to the Trop and got swept by the Rays.

Yankees starters also got roughed up down in Florida — they posted a 4.76 ERA across the three games. What was considered their strength through the first week of the season, after the team allowed just six runs in their first six games, quickly flipped back. In Boston, fans just watched the Sox starters allow just three runs across 17 innings, a 1.59 ERA.

The season may be only 15 games old, but the complete 180 these two rivals have done should put a smile on Red Sox fans' faces. The two squads will match up for the first time in 2026 in just over a week, for a three-game set at Fenway Park starting April 21. With the trends of the last two series, the Red Sox should be circling that matchup on their calendars.
