Red Sox fans confounded by ruthless ESPN trade deadline assessment

Craig Breslow did what all of Red Sox Nation hoped he would on trade deadline day — he bought. He made the most shocking move of the entire deadline and acquired the best catcher on the market in Adley Rutschman. He also bolstered the bullpen with another high-end reliever and got a depth outfielder who can cover all three outfield spots. Besides the moves on deadline day, he also went and got Curtis Mead a week earlier. 

Even with fans squabbling over the price paid for Rutschman and Erik Miller, it's hard to look at this deadline as anything but a major win in Boston.

David Schoenfield disagrees, though. In his trade deadline winner and loser article for ESPN, Schoenfield listed the Red Sox in the loser category. The longtime ESPN employee called the Red Sox's moves “bizarre."

“Giving up three of your top five prospects…is a wild pay for Rutschman. Mayer, one of the top prospects in the game not so long ago, was flipped for a lefty reliever who walks six batters per nine innings," he wrote.

Schoenfield is obviously caught up on the packages the Red Sox gave up. While industry experts and rival executives seem to be aligned on the fact that Boston overpaid for Rutschman, and may have given up on Mayer too soon, it was all done with the 2026 World Series in clear view. 

Going all in should never put teams in the 'loser' category after the trade deadline

Breslow made a move for the present, not the future. It was something Red Sox fans had been clamoring for, and something that Red Sox and National analysts are applauding. 

Speaking with the Section 10 Podcast, NESN’s Tom Caron gave a viral quote: “I’m really tired of prospect rankings, I want parades.” On the Baseball Tonight Podcast’s “Biggest Winners & Losers of MLB Trade Deadline” episode, senior MLB insider Jeff Passan gave the Red Sox an “A++ for giving a damn.”

Breslow clearly identified a need at this deadline. He went all in on a team that has the best record in all of baseball since June 12. Just because they paid the price for a top catcher in baseball, who came from inside the division, doesn’t mean they are a loser. Just because they decided to part ways with a former top prospect, who wasn’t working out, for an elite reliever with years of control doesn’t make them a loser.

Breslow knows something special is brewing in Boston. Not only did he affect the on the field play with upgrades, but he let the entire organization know this is a team worth believing in, and that psychological boost will go a long way. Calling the Red Sox losers because they traded some top prospects who weren’t going to factor in this season is a thoughtless take.
