Boston Red Sox fans have had a rough go of it in 2026, and the organization's attempts to fix things haven't been well-engineered. Alex Cora's firing in April hasn't led to the culture change that Boston's higher-ups were hoping for. Moreover, the shady handling of Jason Varitek ticked off fans and made Boston's upper management look like a lying, propaganda-fueled failure.
Red Sox fans aren't over it, and neither is former New York Yankees star (and Red Sox adversary) Alex RodrĂguez, who appeared on FOX and asserted that not only is Cora the best manager in baseball, but that the Red Sox essentially punted on their season when they fired Cora and Varitek.
The Red Sox's record has hit a new low of 14 games below .500. Under interim manager Chad Tracy, all of the same problems persist for the 2026 Red Sox that were there under Cora ... because these are roster problems, not managerial problems. In other words, these are Craig Breslow problems.
Red Sox fans can't help but agree with Alex Rodriguez when it comes to Alex Cora
As RodrĂguez alluded to, Cora has proven that he's a successful manager. He won a World Series at the helm of the Red Sox in 2018! What else do you need to see? Did Breslow and the rest of upper management really think that getting rid of a manager of Cora's caliber would magically solve this disaster of a season?
While Breslow's done a nice job of establishing a strong starting rotation in Boston, he's run a lot of important offensive talent out of town. The Red Sox had Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman on their team last season. A more competent CBO than Breslow would have ensured that both — heck, at least one — of these guys was retained moving forward. Breslow failed miserably in that regard.
Now, we're hearing reports that Red Sox's ownership has stepped in to help with Boston's effort to acquire a right-handed bat. Isn't that an embarrassing report for Breslow to see out there? The notion that he needs help from ownership to acquire players? What was he hired for?
A-Rod did suggest that there's still hope for the 2026 Red Sox
RodrĂguez said something during his TV appearance that can give Red Sox fans hope. He said that the American League "stinks" this year and that no one is really out of the race.
He's right. Despite their horrific season, the Red Sox aren't totally out of it. Fans shouldn't give up hope completely yet. What would really be refreshing at this point would be to see Boston move on from Breslow in the middle of the year (like, right now). That would give the fan base a huge boost and probably galvanize the players on the field, too. Is it going to happen? Don't bet on it.
