The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox are slated to finish out their lone series of the year on May 14. First pitch is expected for 6:45 p.m. at Fenway Park.
But the forecast in Boston has looked dark and rainy for days. Different outlets report an 80-95 percent chance of rain around the time of first pitch, and the high chances of precipitation continue well into the night, throughout the time the game could be played. The Red Sox and Phillies won't meet again this season and neither club has an off day on Friday, so scheduling a makeup date in the event of a rainout won't be easy.
That may not be the most pressing concern for fans with tickets to tonight's game, however. The Red Sox were recently involved in a rainout controversy — Boston postponed its May 9 game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to poor weather, but the forecast showed for days that it would rain throughout the game. Despite this, the Red Sox canceled mere minutes before the first pitch was supposed to be thrown.
Fans had been at Fenway Park for hours. There are Sox fans all over New England, and some likely came from other states. They paid for parking or other transportation. Some bought food and drinks. Others bought merchandise at the team store. All were dismissed at a moment's notice due to circumstances the team expected for days, or at the very least, hours before the game.
Fans hope Red Sox will call May 14 Phillies game early after recent rainout robbery against Rays
The Red Sox have become infamous for doing anything to make or save a couple bucks and it's hard to see this rainout strategy as anything other than a cash grab. Boston has a chance to redeem itself on May 14 by canceling the game early and sparing everyone with tickets the time and expense of seeing a game at Fenway.
It could be difficult to find a makeup date that works for both Boston and Philly, which might make the Red Sox more keen to wait as long as possible to see if they can play tonight. The teams only have a few mutual days off throughout the rest of the season. But the writing is seemingly on the wall based on the evening's forecast, and the right thing do to would be to postpone early.
Paying fans deserve to be treated better than the Red Sox treated them a week ago. If they're going to call the game off, they should do so earlier than they did last time.
