It's been less than a year since the San Francisco Giants traded for Rafael Devers in a shock blockbuster deal. It seemed like a great move for the Giants, who had a terrible time attracting big-money free agents in recent years, and were able to get a perennial All-Star in the middle of his prime, and under contract for another eight-plus years, for a bargain.
Reality hasn't been all it was cracked up to be in the Bay Area, though. Devers has only been a .240 hitter for the Giants with a middling .758 OPS. His defense at first base never came around, and he's been a DH a little of 50% of the time. It hasn't just been rough for Raffy either — the Giants are well under .500 throughout Devers' tenure.
Just as it's been a rough start to 2026 in Boston, it's been a rough start in San Fran, too. They are 18-26 to start the season, and USA Today's Bob Nightengale just released a damning report. In his "MLB trade deadline: Five teams to watch as executives weigh in on wild scenarios" article, Nightengale reported that the Giants would love to move Devers, as well as their other big-money contracts.
Red Sox Nation is now quietly watching the situation unfold from a distance. Red Sox fans had a front row seat to the damage Devers can do. While they were sad to see him go, there was some relief in the fact that he was sent to the opposite league and all the way across the country. Out of sight, out of mind, mostly. Now that he might be back on the trade market, Red Sox Nation is watching to see where he might end up, and really hoping it isn't one place.
The one place Red Sox fans hope Rafael Devers doesn't go

The New York Yankees would seemingly be a perfect fit for Devers. He mashed in the Bronx throughout his career and has years of experience playing in the American League East. That would be a major gut punch to the Sox, after they thought that he at least wouldn't be beating up on them during the rest of his career.
Luckily, Red Sox Nation can take a sigh of relief. The Yankees already have one of the highest payrolls in MLB, and owner Hal Steinbrenner made it clear last offseason that they aren't looking to be big spenders right now. Even if the Giants sent some money to cover Devers' $226.5 million remaining, the Yankees would definitely take on at least $130+ million. That's very unlikely to happen.
Also, as Nightengale wrote in his article, it's not likely that the Giants will even be able to move off of Devers or most of their other contracts. Devers just hasn't played well enough to warrant his contract since getting to the Bay Area. The Giants would have to send money if another team wanted Raffy, and for how much is left on the contract, it would have to be an unprecedented amount.
Red Sox Nation can take a small sigh of relief for now. The Devers trade has already haunted them enough. Having him end up in the Bronx would be the final blow, but it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.
