There must be an outside force at play ensuring that Craig Breslow's trade deadline moves don't work out. Adley Rutschman arrived from the Baltimore Orioles on the injured list then shortly after his activation hyperextended his elbow. Eli White has also fallen injured at a critical time.
The former Atlanta Braves outfielder on September 8 got his spikes lodged in a grate on the Green Monster as he climbed on the wall in an attempt to make a play on a fly ball. He stayed in the game but didn't look well in the batter's box. The Red Sox sent him for imaging on the ailing foot and he's since been diagnosed with a foot ligament injury and placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to September 9.
White's injury comes with brutal timing on many fronts. Ceddanne Rafaela is already on the IL with a quad issue and White was the best replacement for his impeccable defense in center field. White had also been playing exceptionally well in the lead-up to his injury, with a .294/.314/.471 slash line in the 15 games before his IL placement.
Kristian Campbell, a potential outfield replacement, was just placed on the Triple-A IL with a foot contusion. Campbell was also in his groove at the plate when his injury hit with seven hits in his last five games, but Boston can't turn to him for the outfield vacancy.
Red Sox place Eli White on 10-day IL with foot ligament injury at worst possible time, recall fan-favorite Anthony Seigler
The Red Sox have called Anthony Seigler up to take White's roster spot. Boston optioned Seigler on August 30 to activate Trevor Story, and this latest move un-does the tough roster decision — Seigler was one of the high-energy drivers behind the Sox's winning streak in July and into August and his energy is infectious.
Seigler is slashing .250/.331/.405 over 48 games with the Red Sox this season. Sox fans will be glad to see him back in the majors for the real playoff chase, but losing White at the same time is a brutal hand to be dealt.
The 2026 trade deadline was looking like Breslow's best yet, and it might still be, given how well White fit the Red Sox's needs when healthy. Erik Miller has also been great since his arrival in Boston and Rutschman has had his moments. But the Sox's horrible luck with injuries strikes again at a horrible moment.
