It's been over a month since Garrett Crochet last took the mound for the Boston Red Sox, but the players Boston traded for him are largely in the Chicago White Sox organization (Kyle Teel and Wikelman Gonzalez are on the injured list, but they've played well when healthy). The final player in the four-piece package is expected to make his MLB debut soon.

The White Sox have called up former Red Sox outfield prospect Braden Montgomery, first reported by Matt Snyder of CBS Sports. Another former Red Sox prospect, David Sandlin, was optioned (alongside others) to the minor leagues to make roster space for him. Boston selected Montgomery with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft and he never played a game in the Red Sox organization before it shipped him to Chicago for Crochet.

Montgomery is an outfielder so his fit with the Red Sox would be nonexistent this season. The outfield is packed, and would be more packed if Roman Anthony was healthy and the Sox didn't trade Jhostynxon Garcia to the Pittsburgh Pirates over the offseason.

Montgomery had an impressive tenure down on the White Sox's farm, working himself all the way up to the major leagues in less than two seasons — he reached Double-A for the last month of the 2025 season and slashed .270/.360/.444 across the three lower levels of the minor league system over 121 games.

White Sox promote hot-hitting former Red Sox prospect Braden Montgomery to major leagues

The 23-year-old outfielder started the 2026 season in Double-A and was promoted to Triple-A by May 3. He slashed .315/.417/.495 with eight doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI over 29 games with the Charlotte Knights. He stalled out a bit in the weeks between his promotion to Charlotte and the big leagues, but he's slashing .455/.581/.636 with a home run and eight RBI since the calendar flipped to June.

Montgomery is just the latest young player to join a White Sox team with a promising future, evidenced by unexpected success this year. Twenty-five-year-old Japanese phenom Munetaka Murakami has raked for Chicago with 20 homers in 57 games. Sandlin posted a one-hit, one-run, six-inning major league debut and Chase Meidroth is still up to his consistent hitting ways (.274/.343/.392).

Former Red Sox players will be a big part of the White Sox's rebound. Boston got an excellent piece for them in Crochet, but hopefully he can return to his 2025 self for the second half of the season to compete with Chicago's breakouts.
