Red Sox avoided disaster after fans learn of offseason Corey Seager rumor

Another old, overpaid shortstop in Boston? No thanks, we're good.

The Boston Red Sox front office has been under fire for plenty of reasons during the Craig Breslow era, but ... it could always be worse. Sure, the Red Sox didn't get the big bat they there were shopping for over the winter, but what if Breslow had decided to grossly overpay for an aging, dimming star like Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager?

As it turns out, that exact idea was likely discussed by Breslow and other members of Boston's front office, with a new report from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal revealing that the Red Sox reached out to the Rangers about Seager during the offseason.

Red Sox reportedly explored Corey Seager trade before 2026 season

Plenty of Red Sox fans were frustrated beyond belief with Trevor Story before he hit the IL this season. Those same fans would have been blasting Seager if he were a Red Sox right now. The two-time World Series MVP, now 32 years old, is on the decline. He's hitting .182 this season and has been afflicted with injury after injury in recent years (he hasn't played more than 123 games in a regular season since 2022).

Not to mention, Seager makes a boatload of money every year, far more than Story does. It's a contract that the Rangers are expected to at least consider shopping around MLB this deadline, but don't expect the Red Sox to dial up Texas' number again.

Craig Breslow's Red Sox "big bat" failure looks a little less bad these days

Remember when Red Sox fans were up in arms about Breslow completely botching Alex Bregman's free agency? While that criticism was warranted, it's also true that Bregman hasn't been that good this year, which makes missing out on him over the winter hurt a lot less.

Meanwhile, the player that Breslow pivoted to after the Bregman debacle — Ranger Suarez — has been awesome for the Red Sox in 2026. And after a horrible first phase of the season, Caleb Durbin has turned things around in a big way. Two Breslow acquisitions! Two wins!

Oh, and let's not downplay Willson Contreras' 2026 success, either. The fiery first baseman is having a career year offensively, with an All-Star Game/HR Derby berth to show for it.

Given all of the tomatoes he's had thrown at him this season, Breslow is probably hiding from public view for now. But hey, the Red Sox are on a winning streak and within view of the Wild Card. Let's not forget that Breslow knows how to assmeble a winning pitching staff and isn't completely allergic to adding a good bat every now and then, either. Who would've thought?
