The Boston Red Sox have had what some would call a logjam in the infield for quite some time now. Between Kiké Hernández, Christian Arroyo, Yu Chang, and Pablo Reyes, someone will need to be moved either via trade or DFA to reinstate Trevor Story from the injured list.
Another piece worth noting in this is that Pablo Reyes' rehab assignment expires today, so by Tuesday, a move will need to be made either to reinstate him to the active roster or to move him.
The move that seems to make the most sense would be trading outfielder turned shortstop Kiké Hernández, who has struggled immensely this season on the defensive end. Currently, Hernández leads the MLB in errors committed with 15, which does not bode well for him remaining with Boston over the other infield options. With that said, we now have reports stating that the Los Angeles Dodgers could be looking to re-unite with him, and bring him in as a right-handed platoon bat.
Dodgers interested in 'reunion' with Red Sox SS/OF Kiké Hernandez
The initial report comes from Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic (sub req), who said the following about the situation:
"Los Angeles also would consider a reunion with Enrique Hernández, a league source said, if he is willing to fit into the kind of niche role the Dodgers are seeking to fill."Fabian Ardaya
If this is the case, it would help the Red Sox out exponentially to be able to offload Kiké in a trade for even a mid to low-level prospect. Even if the Red Sox ultimately just get a little bit of cap relief out of this, it could help them at the trade deadline to make a move. It does make sense for him to be the first out the door if possible, as, despite his previous successes, he has done very little on either side of the ball to warrant the roster spot he holds.
The Dodgers also have pretty significant farm depth, so if the Sox could nab a prospect from the Dodgers' lower levels, that should be sufficient to get the deal done both ways. Overall, this comes at the perfect time for Boston though, as they may be able to find an easy way out of their infield stack up with little to no issue.
