If we have to be honest about the Boston Red Sox, things aren't looking great. The team has looked lost and seems to be dropping further out of a playoff spot every day.
Luckily, this isn't the "MLB Watch" — this is the Boston Red Sox prospect watch. And we talk about prospects here.
Boston's minor league system is trending in the opposite direction as the team. Prospects at every level have thrived and created more buzz for the system. We've seen more promotions, and some top names continue to post big performances.
Roman Anthony is on a seven-game hitting streak. The left-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .320/.382/.560 with three doubles and three home runs in Triple-A. He's driven in nine runs and scored 12. Anthony has looked every bit the top prospect in baseball since being promoted.
Any worries about Kristian Campbell's success at higher levels have quickly been shut down. The right-handed hitting second baseman is 8-for-23 (.348) with one double and two home runs. He's driven in nine runs, scored five, and stolen one base.
Kyle Teel has looked better than the numbers. Don't freak out over a rough patch. The right-handed hitting catcher is 4-for-40 (.100) in Triple-A. He's driven in two runs and scored four more.
Chase Meidroth went 7-for-14 with a double, two triples, and a home run The right-handed hitting infielder is slashing .302/.449/.420 with 19 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs. He's driven in 49 runs, scored 79, and stolen 12 bases.
Top Red Sox prospects Mikey Romero and Hunter Dobbins promoted
Hunter Dobbins was promoted to Triple-A earlier in the week but has yet to appear for Worcester. The right-handed pitcher did make a final Double-A start, tossing six shutout innings (for the second straight outing). Dobbins has a 3.17, .232 BAA, and 1.23 WHIP in 105 innings this season.
Richard Fitts allowed three runs on four hits in five innings this week. The righty still managed seven strikeouts, continuing his trend of missing bats. Fitts has a 4.47 ERA, .261 BAA, and 1.36 WHIP in 22 appearances (21 starts). He's up to 100 strikeouts in 104 2/3 innings.
Luis Guerrero didn't allow a run or a hit in four innings over three appearances. The right-handed reliever only walked one batter and struck out 10. Guerrero has a 3.33 ERA, .199 BAA, and 1.32 WHIP in 39 appearances. He's struck out 74 batters and walked 31.
Boston Red Sox Double-A (Portland)
Mikey Romero was promoted to Double-A on Aug. 25. The left-handed hitting shortstop is slashing .278/.326/.500 with 21 doubles, four triples, and 10 home runs this season. He's driven in 41 runs, scored 43 more, and stolen one base.
Jhostynxon Garcia hit his second Double-A home run this week. The right-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .287/.357/.562 with 20 doubles, three triples, and 23 home runs between Single-A, High-A, and Double-A. He's driven in 62 runs, scored 70, and stolen 16 bags.
Allan Castro hit his first Double-A home run. Even with a low average, he's finding ways to get on base. The switch-hitting outfielder is slashing .235/.355/.429 with 22 doubles, four triples, and 15 home runs between High-A and Double-A. He's driven in 53 runs, scored 73 more, and stolen 15 bases.
Max Ferguson returned and hit a home run. The left-handed hitting utility player hadn't appeared in a game since April 16. Ferguson is 7-for-34 but has two home runs, five steals, and plays great defense at multiple positions.
Phillip Sikes brought some electricity with an inside-the-park home run. The right-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .258/.341/.443 with 22 doubles, one triple, and a career-high 12 home runs. He's driven in 45 runs, scored 58 more, and stolen 20 bases.
Isaac Coffey allowed one unearned run on four hits over five innings in his lone start. The right-handed pitcher struck out 11 batters and didn't walk any. Coffey has been ridiculous this month, surrendering one earned run over 15 innings and striking out 31 batters compared to one walk. He has a 3.34 ERA, .220 BAA, and 1.26 WHIP in 21 games (18 starts). Coffey has 123 strikeouts compared to 44 walks.
Wikelman Gonzalez tossed five no-hit innings this week. The righty walked three batters and struck out six. Gonzalez is down to a 5.17 ERA, .205 BAA, and 1.32 WHIP. He's struck out 75 batters compared to 41 walks in 69 2/3 innings. Gonzalez has turned his season around over the last two months.
Connelly Early allowed three runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. However, the lefty pitcher tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. Early has a 4.00 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 90 innings between High-A and Double-A this season.
Bryce Bonnin made his Double-A debut this week. The righty reliever gave up two hits over two scoreless innings coming out of the bullpen. He struck out three batters and walked three.
Brendan Cellucci gave up one hit over 3 2/3 innings. The left-handed reliever didn't walk anyone and fanned five. Cellucci has a 3.23 ERA, .208 BAA, and 1.40 WHIP between Double-A and Triple-A. He's collected 80 strikeouts compared to 36 walks in 55 2/3 innings.
Christopher Troye tossed a scoreless inning. The righty reliever is down to a 4.66 ERA, .200 BAA, and 1.45 WHIP this season. He has 50 strikeouts compared to 27 walks in 36 2/3 innings. CT has climbed out of the hole that he dug himself early in the year.
Boston Red Sox High-A (Greenville)
Yordanny Monegro continued his run of dominance. The right-handed pitcher gave up just one hit over five scoreless innings. Monegro struck out eight batters while walking two. He has now thrown 36 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
Tyler Uberstine appeared in his first game since 2022. The righty tossed two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and no walks while striking out two batters. It was great to see Uberstine work his way back, and his stuff looked encouraging.
Hayden Mullins came in following Uberstine. The left-handed pitcher allowed one hit over five shutout innings. He didn't walk anyone (one HBP) and struck out six batters. Mullins has a 3.86 ERA, .216 BAA, and 1.30 WHIP in 20 games (17 starts). He's struck out 108 batters compared to 40 walks in 79 1/3 innings.
Noah Dean allowed one run on no hits in 3 1/3 innings. The lefty had a bit of a command issue with five walks, but he also struck out six batters. Dean has a 4.09 ERA, .147 BAA, and 1.09 WHIP between Single-A and High-A. He's struck out 113 batters compared to 46 walks in 77 innings.
Elmer Rodriguez allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. The right-handed pitcher struck out four batters and walked one. Rodriguez has a 3.20 ERA, .203 BAA, and 1.32 WHIP since being promoted to High-A.
Dalton Rogers surrendered two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The lefty walked one batter and struck out a season-high nine. Rogers has a 5.47 ERA, .246 BAA, and 1.59 WHIP in 74 innings.
Blake Wehunt gave up one earned run on four hits in four innings. The right-handed pitcher struck out four batters and walked two. Wehunt has a 3.61 ERA, .201 BAA, and 1.08 WHIP between Single-A and High-A. He has 97 strikeouts compared to 28 walks in 82 1/3 innings.
Jedixson Paez allowed one run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings. The righty walked one batter and struck out seven. Paez has a 2.80 ERA, .240 BAA, and 1.05 WHIP between Single-A and High-A. He has 104 strikeouts compared to 12 walks in 86 2/3 innings.
Max Carlson tossed two perfect innings to pick up a save. The right-handed reliever has a 2.79 ERA, .247 BAA, and 1.27 WHIP between Single-A and High-A. He's struck out 79 batters compared to 20 walks in 61 1/3 innings.
Miguel Bleis went 2-for-12 but did draw four walks. The right-handed hitting outfielder has a .185 batting average in High-A but is playing better than the numbers. He's up to 18 steals on 21 attempts with Greenville and has 34 steals total this season.
Justin Riemer had a hit in three of the four games he appeared in this week. The right-handed hitting infielder has a .258 average and .395 OBP in High-A. He's drawn more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) and is 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
Andy Lugo collected at least one hit in four of the five games he appeared in this week. The right-handed hitting utility player is slashing .268/.328/.366 with 28 doubles, one triple, and two home runs between Single-A and High-A. He's driven in 38 runs, scored 41, and stolen 26 bags.
Bryan Gonzalez has been Greenville's best offensive player this season (who's been around all year). The right-handed hitting first baseman/outfielder is slashing .264/.334/.503 with 12 doubles, two triples, and 18 home runs. He's driven in 53 runs, scored 54 more, and stolen 14 bases.
Boston Red Sox Single-A (Salem)
Natanael Yuten might be the most clutch player since David Ortiz. The left-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .251/.314/.404 with 20 doubles, seven triples, and six home runs. He's driven in 47 runs, scored 36, and stolen 12 bases. Yuten continues to come through in the biggest situations.
Nelly Taylor has been awesome in August, hitting .302. The right-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .228/.336/.358 with 24 doubles, three triples, and six home runs. He's driven in 46 runs, scored 69 more, and stolen 31 bases. Taylor's also been a constant highlight reel with his defense in the outfield.
Nazzan Zanetello went 4-for-22 but had a double, a home run, and a walk-off single. The right-handed hitting infielder has a .166 average (.290 OBP) with 10 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. He's driven in 21 runs, scored 33 more, and stolen three bags.
Karim Ayubi is on a five-game hitting streak and had a walk-off hit this week. The left-handed hitting outfielder is 6-for-22 (.273) with a double since being promoted to Single-A.
Franklin Arias went 4-for-24 with two doubles this week. He also drove in five runs. The right-handed hitting shortstop has a .221 average with five doubles and two home runs in Single-A. He's driven in 16 runs, scored 10, and stolen five bases. Arias also made a ridiculous play in the field.
Marvin Alcantara had three two-hit games this week. The right-handed hitting infielder is up to a .245 average with eight doubles, three triples, and two home runs. He's driven in 40 runs, scored 51 more, and stolen 12 bases.
Brooks Brannon is on a three-game hitting streak. The right-handed hitting catcher/first baseman is slashing .259/.338/.391 with seven doubles, two triples, and four home runs in Single-A. He's driven in 20 runs, scored 16 more, and stolen four bases.
Jojo Ingrassia returned off the IL this week and pitched his first inning since July 14. The left-handed pitcher allowed one hit and one walk in a scoreless inning while striking out two batters. Ingrassia has a 1.99 ERA, .188 BAA, and 1.01 WHIP in 19 games (10 starts). He has 88 strikeouts compared to 18 walks in 54 1/3 innings.
Juan Valera allowed two hits in three scoreless innings. The righty walked two batters and struck out three. Valera has allowed three runs in 16 1/3 innings since being promoted to Single-A. He has a .098 BAA and a 1.04 WHIP.
Trennor O'Donnell surrendered one run on two hits over four innings. The right-handed pitcher didn't walk anyone (one HBP) and struck out two batters. O'Donnell has a 3.72 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings.
