The Double-A Portland Sea Dogs' season ended on Sept. 15 after they fell just shy of a playoff spot in the Eastern League.
Meanwhile, the Worcester Red Sox are still fighting for a postseason spot. They are doing it without some of their biggest names — Richard Fitts, Luis Guerrero, and Zach Penrod are all in the majors (and thriving).
Roman Anthony is riding a 12-game on-base streak through the home stretch of Worcester's season. The left-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .327/.431/.504 with nine doubles, one triple, and three home runs since being promoted to Triple-A. He's driven in 15 runs, scored 28 more, and stolen three bases in 29 games. Anthony has 22 walks compared to 26 strikeouts.
Kyle Teel has, unsurprisingly, figured things out in Triple-A. The left-handed hitting catcher is 12-for-32 (.375) with 12 walks compared to just six strikeouts in September. Teel is slashing .233/.362/.326 with two doubles and two home runs in 24 games. He's driven in 15 runs, scored 20, and stolen two bases.
Chase Meidroth had a walk-off walk on Sept. 15. Because, of course, he did. Meidroth is slashing .298/.444/.407 with 19 doubles, three triples, and seven home runs. He's driven in 57 runs, scored 86 more, and stolen 13 bases. Meidroth has 104 walks compared to 68 strikeouts this season.
Tyler McDonough has been sneaky good this season. The switch-hitting utility player holds a .250 average (.321 OBP) with 23 doubles, three triples, and five home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. He's driven in 48 runs, scored 50 more, and stolen 18 bases.
Tyler Miller made his Triple-A debut this week. The left-handed hitting corner infielder/outfielder is 0-for-8 with a walk and a run scored. He also threw a perfect inning in a blowout.
Hunter Dobbins allowed one run on six hits over six innings in his lone start of the week. The right-handed pitcher struck out five batters and walked one. Pidgeotto has a 3.45 ERA over three starts (15 2/3 innings) since being promoted to Triple-A.
Brian Van Belle gave up one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. The righty struck out five batters and walked two. BVB is down to a 4.57 ERA this year and has a 2.41 ERA in 56 innings out of the bullpen (8.05 ERA in 34 2/3 innings as a starter).
Boston Red Sox Double-A (Portland)
Mikey Romero slumped a bit to end the season but did have two multi-hit games. The left-handed hitting shortstop slashed .271/.312/.509 with 24 doubles, four triples, and 16 home runs between Rookie Ball, High-A, and Double-A. He had 53 RBI, 54 runs scored, and one stolen base. Romero put himself in a fantastic position as one of the top prospects in the system for next year.
Jhostynxon Garcia was one of the breakout stars of 2024. He finished the year with a three-game hitting streak. The right-handed hitting outfielder slashed .286/.356/.536 with 24 doubles, five triples, and 23 home runs between Single-A, High-A, and Double-A. He posted 66 RBI, 78 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases.
Blaze Jordan had an unlucky year, with freak injuries derailing his season twice. He still put up decent numbers and had three multi-hit games this week. The right-handed hitting corner infielder had a .261 average with 22 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. He had 61 RBI, 35 runs scored, and two stolen bases.
Ahbram Liendo had a big week to end the season. He went 7-for-19 with two doubles, three RBI, and three steals. The switch-hitting infielder had a .196 average (.290 OBP) with seven doubles, three triples, and three home runs between High-A and Double-A. He had 32 RBI, 40 runs scored, and 31 steals.
Alex Binelas hit another home run this week to cap off an impressive season. The left-handed hitting corner infielder slashed .252/.354/.409 with 13 doubles, five triples, and eight home runs. He posted 57 RBI, 45 runs scored, and 13 steals (in 13 attempts). Binelas is an impressive 35-for-38 in his career on stolen base attempts.
Elih Marrero hit a home run this week. The switch-hitting catcher finished the year slashing .260/.330/.452 with 13 doubles and seven home runs (career-high) between Double-A and Triple-A. He drove in 24 runs (career-high), scored 28 more, and stole 11 bases.
The Double-A season ends and the WooSox continue to fight for a playoff spot in this week's Red Sox Prospect Update
Bryan Gonzalez got to test out Double-A this week, going 0-for-2. The right-handed hitting first baseman could be a big bat for them next season.
Wikelman Gonzalez's (likely) final Double-A start was a good one. The right-handed pitcher allowed one unearned run on two hits over five innings. He struck out seven batters and walked two. Gonzalez finished with a 4.73 ERA, .198 BAA, and 1.25 WHIP. He struck out 92 batters compared to 46 walks in 83 2/3 innings.
Isaac Coffey posted a dominant run to end his year. The righty continued that on Sept. 14 by tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and three walks but struck out 10 batters. Coffey posted a 3.17 ERA, .215 BAA, and 1.23 WHIP in Double-A. He struck out 148 batters compared to 51 walks in 113 2/3 innings.
David Sandlin didn't allow a run on just one hit over three innings. The right-handed pitcher struck out three batters and walked one. Sandlin posted a 5.34 ERA, .269 BAA, and 1.38 WHIP between High-A and Double-A. He struck out 82 batters compared to 18 walks in 57 1/3 innings.
Caleb Bolden finished the season by tossing a career-high in innings on Sept. 15. The righty didn't give up a run on two hits over six innings. He struck out six batters and walked two. Bolden finished with a 3.88 ERA, .250 BAA, and 1.38 WHIP in Double-A. He struck out 58 batters compared to 27 walks in 58 innings.
Blake Wehunt made his Double-A debut. The right-handed pitcher allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one. The chicken farmer didn't look nearly as bad as the numbers suggest. There's work to do, but it was great to see him get a taste of Double-A in a season that saw him start in Single-A.
Juan Daniel Encarnacion allowed one run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings in his only appearance of the series. The righty walked two batters and struck out four. JDE struggled mightily in Double-A. His last two outings were extremely encouraging, though.
Gabriel Jackson gave up one earned run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings over two appearances this week. The right-handed reliever walked one batter and struck out five. Jackson posted a 3.86 ERA, .211 BAA, and 1.07 WHIP in three appearances for Portland. He struck out seven batters compared to one walk in 4 2/3 innings.
Robert Kwiatkowski didn't allow a run in 4 1/3 innings over two appearances out of the bullpen this week. The righty gave up one hit and walked three batters while striking out six. Kwiatkowski has a 2.68 ERA, .212 BAA, and 1.10 WHIP between Double-A and Triple-A. He struck out 71 batters compared to 25 walks in 77 1/3 innings.
