Red Sox promote hot-hitting prospect for MLB debut in bonus trade deadline move
The revolving door of 2024 Boston Red Sox infielders never stops. The squad called up a switch-hitting infield prospect for their series finale against the Mariners.
Nick Sogard has received the call-up to the big leagues and Jamie Westbrook has been optioned back to Worcester. Boston's skipper Alex Cora clarified that Sogard will get the start at second base against lefties.
The 26-year-old slashed .279/.382/.439 with a .821 OPS over 89 games with the WooSox. Sogard brings some extra-base power, as he's collected 17 doubles, a triple and 12 homers this season. He's walked 56 times and fanned 83.
Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic recently reported that the Red Sox may option Vaughn Grissom to Triple-A when he's through with his rehab assignment on Aug. 9. Boston fears Grissom may not be the best version of himself after just 23 games in the majors this season, but Sogard has an entire slate of work in Triple-A on his stat sheet.
Red Sox call up infield prospect Nick Sogard, DFA Yohan Ramírez, add Lucas Sims
The Sogard-Westbrook swap isn't the only roster move the Sox made before their getaway game against the Mariners, who are hot on their tail in the wild card standings. Boston designated reliever Yohan Ramírez for assignment to place trade-deadline addition Lucas Sims on the roster.
Ramírez made one appearance for the Sox after he was DFA'd by the Dodgers on July 25. He gave up two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings against Seattle. The Red Sox are the fourth team he's pitched for this season, and he may be destined to play for a fifth since Boston acquired two new relievers at the deadline and have a few rehabbing injuries.
