The Boston Red Sox's prize from the Chris Sale trade will finally debut on May 3 against the Minnesota Twins.
Infielder Vaughn Grissom will be in the lineup at Target Field. He'll occupy Enmanuel Valdez's usual spot at second base after he was optioned yesterday. Bobby Dalbec was also shipped down to Worcester, and Grissom holds his spot on the roster.
Boston's new infielder's Red Sox debut has been pushed back multiple times. Grissom missed all of spring training because he was healing a groin strain that kept him sidelined until the Sox's series with the Giants beginning on April 30. But Grissom's debut needed to be pushed back yet again after a bout with the flu kept him off the field against San Francisco.
Grissom will bat seventh and follow two of the Red Sox's other new infielders, Garrett Cooper and Dominic Smith.
Vaughn Grissom debuts for the Red Sox on May 3 at Target Field
Grissom batted .333/.444/.400 with a .884 OPS in his nine-game stay with the Woo Sox. He struck out often in the early going of his rehab assignment, but he got more comfortable at the plate and finished with nine strikeouts and five walks. He also stole two bases with Worcester.
The infielder is healthy just in time to face his former team in the coming days. The Red Sox will travel to Atlanta to play a two-game series against the Braves from May 7-8. Boston will battle a familiar face and the player it exchanged in the trade for Grissom — 2018 World Series champion Sale.
