Top Boston Red Sox prospect Mikey Romero has been on a tear with High-A Greenville in recent weeks. But a reported injury will shelf the young shortstop for at least seven days.
Greenville has placed Romero on the seven-day injured list, per BSI's own Hunter Noll, although the move is not official yet. The nature of his injury is unclear, but a seven-day stint isn't cause for extreme concern.
Romero's injury came at an unfortunate time, though. The 2022 first-round pick earned South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors — alongside his teammate, Greenville pitcher Yordanny Monegro — for his performance in the first week of August. The 20-year-old posted a .480 batting average, three homers, two doubles and 11 RBI to secure the award.
The day after he was named Player of the Week, Romero was named SAL Player of the Month. He slashed .354/.382/.780, collected 29 hits, 12 doubles. seven homers and 19 RBI. His high level of play has Red Sox fans paying close attention to the young infielder.
Greenville Drive places No. 10 Red Sox prospect Mikey Romero on seven-day IL
Romero battled injuries early in his Red Sox career, including at the beginning of this season. His campaign began in May after he rehabbed from the same lower back issue that sidelined him for much of 2023.
His months on the IL early in his career had Sox fans branding Chaim Bloom's pick a bust. Just as his stock began to rise, Romero is back on the shelf, hopefully for a short time. If he only needs the seven days of his IL stint to recover, Romero could be back to crushing baseballs and catching attention from Sox fans next week.
