Nobody wants to say it, but the Red Sox might have the best bullpen duo in MLB

Adding bullpen reinforcements was the theme at the MLB trade deadline last month, as nearly every contender was in the market for a high-leverage relief pitcher. The Boston Red Sox were no different, adding lefty specialist Steven Matz (even though the fans wanted more).

Matz has been terrific since he arrived in Boston. But for the Red Sox, the success of their bullpen has been tied to the dominant stretch of outings by Alrodis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock. That duo has been dominant for almost two full months now.

After a 2024 season where Chapman seemed to lose some life on his fastball, with his average velocity under 98 mph (accompanied by a 3.79 ERA), the 37-year-old veteran has turned back the clock this season. Chapman's fastball has discovered the fountain of youth, approaching his career average of 99.3 mph, and he enters Wednesday with an 1.06 ERA. It's no surprise that Chapman was named to the AL All-Star team earlier this season, and suddenly he looks like one of the top relievers on the market once he hits free agency in November.

Not to be undone, Whitlock has become an anchor in the Red Sox's bullpen. Through his first 52 appearances this season, Whitlock has a 2.67 ERA while striking out nearly 30% of the hitters he has faced this season. Unlike Chapman, Whitlock is under contract through the 2026 season and has a pair of club options at the end of his deal.

As things stand, the Red Sox would enter the postseason as the top Wild Card team in the American League. It would mean the Red Sox hosting the Yankees for a three-game in the first round. Among the biggest differences between the two teams has been the bullpen. With Chapman and Whitlock pitching like they are, the Red Sox are a dangerous opponent for any team they face in October.

Considering the success that Chapman and Whitlock have had this season as a tandem, the Red Sox may want to place a priority on bringing back the eight-time All-Star this offseason. Given his success, Chapman almost certainly will look to continue his career, and he apparently loves the Red Sox.
