Despite uttering that he would play wherever the team asked of him back in spring training, the relationship between the Boston Red Sox and superstar Rafael Devers devolved into an untenable one.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow jettisoned the Red Sox's homegrown star and the last member of the 2018 World Series-winning quad to the San Fransico Giants, a move that rivals the Betts trade in terms of calamity among Red Sox Nation. However, with the season far from over, and the Red Sox in the fight for a Wild Card spot, it is imperative that the team quickly move on and act on the financial flexibility they are now afforded after offloading Devers’ massive contract.

While fans may question where the Red Sox go from here, MLB insider Jon Heyman thinks next on the docket for the Red Sox is giving out extensions to the newly signed Alex Bregman and top prospect Roman Anthony.

For Boston, these moves make a lot of sense, especially after it was reported that Bregman would be open to an extension before he likely opts out and hits the open market this winter.

Locking Bregman down long-term would do wonders for this Red Sox team. After Devers's departure, Bregman is the face of the team. In addition to his on-field success with the Red Sox, he has seamlessly integrated himself into the clubhouse, acting as a true veteran leader and mentor for younger players like the aforementioned Anthony.

With Bregman admiring Boston's commitment to winning, it is time for the Red Sox to repay him for his faith by signing him long-term. In addition to his Gold Glove-caliber defense and explosive bat, this young team will need an experienced leader with postseason success if it wishes to reach the postseason.

In addition to Bregman, an extension to the team's number-one prospect, Anthony, is also in order. Despite his slow start, which may seem quite underwhelming on the surface, Anthony has been hitting the cover off the ball, and advanced metrics have shown that he is due for a breakout very soon

With the hype and intrigue that Anthony has generated, it is time for the Red Sox to show their faith in their top prospect by locking him down for the foreseeable future. Despite Bregman being the face of the team now, it is the hope that Anthony will take this title in due time and lead the Red Sox to postseason glory for the next decade plus.
