The Jason Varitek-Boston Red Sox relationship might be in the rearview, but Varitek's wife, Catherine, is still burning the organization. Responding to an X user on Monday who expressed the desire for Jason to return to Boston, Catherine Varitek delivered a biting tweet that went viral among Red Sox fans.

"They have the “smartest man in baseball” running the show," Catherine wrote sarcastically. "They’ll be OK without Jason, that’s what they wanted. It’s what’s best for the team," adding a gleeful emoji for irony.

It's difficult not to side with Catherine and Jason Varitek in all of this, regardless of how you feel about former Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was ousted on April 25 along with Varitek and five other coaches.

Catherine Varitek continues roasting the Red Sox following her husband's departure from the organization

The Red Sox's terrible handling of Varitek amidst Cora's firing was a complete debacle replete with blatant lies to the press and fans. Boston's upper management triumvirate — chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, president Sam Kennedy, and owner John Henry — made it appear that Varitek had been "re-assigned" to a different role within the organization, even though he'd been fired.

Breslow and Kennedy have since been carrying on with the lie, with Breslow saying recently with a straight face that he is hopeful that Varitek and the Red Sox organization will make amends in the future, possibly leading to Varitek's return.

Craig Breslow hasn't given an iota of value to the Red Sox as compared with Jason Varitek

The cover-up job that Breslow and Co. have done with the Varitek situation hasn't gone over well with fans. Nor has it gone over swimmingly with former Red Sox players like Pedro Martinez, who came out and publicly defended Varitek recently.

When we all look back on this in a few years — at which point Breslow will be long gone — this Varitek saga will stand out as a symbol of everything wrong with the Breslow era: lack of accountability from upstairs, word-salad explanations for mysterious decisions, downright lying, poor roster and staff construction, and an inability for Breslow and the Red Sox franchise to connect with other human beings (fans, players and staff).

The Red Sox of the 00s and 10s were relatable, human, impossible not to root for, and — for the most part — really, really good at baseball (they used to score runs!). Varitek represents all of the success that the Red Sox have had this century. By moving on from 'Tek in the way it happened, the Breslow Red Sox rebelled against all of that success, uprooted their recent history, and bet on themselves (and their analytics) to prevail. And we all see where this is headed.
