David Ortiz calls out Yankees and New York fans for awful World Series showing
The New York Yankees have had a rough stretch against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, but Game 3 was particularly difficult.
The Yankees were held to five hits and two runs on Oct. 28 at Yankee Stadium. They didn't score until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Alex Verdugo broke through with a two-run homer to try and begin a rally with just one out left. But Gleyber Torres followed with a groundout to end the game on an unceremonious note.
When Verdugo homered, the seats weren't full and the response from the New York crowd was underwhelming. On Fox's postgame show, Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz called Yankees fans out for their lack of enthusiasm and atmosphere.
"Even when Fat Joe came out, the body language from the fans was like DAMN! I was like what's going on here?! Are we in a funeral already?!" Ortiz said. "I tell you what man, your body language has to be there all the way to the last out."
Red Sox legend David Ortiz called out Yankees fans for low energy at World Series Game 3
It's appropriate and typical for former Red Sox Ortiz to call the Yankees and their fans out, but Alex Rodriguez nodded in passionate agreement during Big Papi's rant. New York didn't bring the house down like the rest of MLB expected it to.
Fat Joe's performance wasn't exactly inspiring, but Ortiz's point still stands. New York fans pride themselves on their energy and obnoxiousness, but not everyone was invested enough in the World Series to stay in their seats all game or give an appropriate level of gusto when Verdugo got the Yankees on the board. New York had the top of its order coming up and was a bloop and a blast away from tying the game, but Yankees fans didn't act like they had any confidence in their guys.
Yankee Stadium had regular-season energy when fans should've been trying to rile their players up. If Yankee fans don't want to see their team swept in their home park tonight, they'll need to step up the hype. The Dodgers and Dodgers fans are leaving them in the dust.
