Since May 4, the day Roman Anthony injured his hand, Boston Red Sox fans have anxiously awaited any positive update on his recovery progress. So far, none have come.
The unfortunate updates continued on June 24, coming up on two months since the last time Anthony has played in a game. Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reported before Boston's getaway game against the Colorado Rockies that Anthony hasn't made any real progress since his team left for a six-game West Coast road trip. Anthony has attempted to swing a lighter bat but he hasn't been able to progress, even that way.
Because of his stalled recovery, there's still no real timeline for his return, but fans can be certain it won't be soon. Anthony still has to build up his swing, which could take weeks. Then, he'll need a full rehab assignment because he will have been out for months by the time he's finally ready to play.
Anthony may not be able to return to action until August, if at all this season. It's just another brutal hand dealt to the Red Sox, who are already 13 games below .500 and without Garrett Crochet — Anthony isn't coming back to save the season like he did a year ago.
Roman Anthony still isn't swinging, still weeks from Red Sox return if it comes at all
The sophomore wasn't hitting like himself even when he was healthy. He'd batted .229/.354/.321 with five doubles, a triple and a home run over 30 games. Anthony was beginning to heat up when his injury struck, batting .269/.345/.346 in his last seven games, but Red Sox fans will have to wait quite some time to see if the breakout stuck.
At least Anthony's long-term injury has kept Boston's outfield logjam from being a major problem — Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela have been the team's go-to starters. Unfortunately, Duran is a poor replacement for Anthony in left field, as he's only slashing .199/.258/.366 with a hideous 96 strikeouts over 72 games.
The Red Sox had big dreams for Anthony this season, but it was always bold to place the weight of those expectations on someone so young. Anthony's injury and early-season struggles have caused some fans' confidence in him to waver, but hopefully he can pick up his 2025 production when he returns healthy, either this season or next.
