Opening Day has finally arrived. The Boston Red Sox set their 26-man roster on Wednesday, and there weren't many surprises. The Sox head into a new season with many new faces and up-and-coming stars on the squad.

After an early playoff exit last season, the goal this season is to push further into October. With bigger aspirations comes more pressure for everyone. The front office made major improvements to the rotation and the defense, while putting belief in some of the young players to step up in big ways.

While all 26 players will be feeling the pressure, as well as the manager and chief baseball officer, some will feel it a little bit more.

4 Red Sox facing early pressure as 2026 Opening Day officially arrives

Jarren Duran

Duran is already known to put a lot of pressure on himself, but coming off a down year in 2025, he’s going to need to try to get back to his ‘24 form. Among the outfield group, Duran will likely see the most time at DH this season, meaning his offensive production will matter that much more. If Duran is underperforming, Masataka Yoshida is right there to take some of his at-bats away.

Johan Oviedo

The Red Sox traded for the former Pittsburgh Pirate over the offseason and it seemed he had the inside track to a rotation spot — many reporters expected Connelly Early and Payton Tolle to be sent to Triple-A due to service time concerns. That's not what played out, and Early had an excellent spring and won the starting spot, bumping Oviedo to the bullpen.

Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval are both starting the season on the 15-day injured list. They can both debut as early as April 6, and they're proven veterans who are gunning for major league spots. If Oviedo fails to take advantage of his bullpen role, he has a minor league option remaining and could quickly lose his roster spot to one of those two.

Marcelo Mayer

Mayer was challenged this spring to perform, and he did just that, winning the opening day job at 2B. That doesn't guarantee him a spot on the roster all season, though. His elite defense will carry him for a while, but Boston added plenty of infield depth this offseason, and if he struggles at the plate, Andruw Monasterio, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Nick Sogard are all available to take over.

Ryan Watson

Coming over in the Rule 5 Draft, Watson could be the next Garrett Whitlock or Justin Slaten. The righty struggled at the beginning of spring training, but he settled in and allowed just two runs in his last five outings. He’ll get low-leverage opportunities to start the season, but if he struggles, veteran Tommy Kahnle can be called up quickly to take his spot.
