4 players who will benefit from the Red Sox's trade deadline moves and 2 who will not

An eventful trade deadline day saw Craig Breslow make the biggest splash, acquiring three-time All-Star Adley Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers from the Baltimore Orioles for a haul of prospects plus Carlos Narváez. He also made two other moves, trading Marcelo Mayer for reliever Erik Miller and minor league outfielder Carlos Gutierrez and acquiring outfielder Eli White for righty pitcher Tyler Uberstine.

While it is only three moves, it was exactly what the Boston Red Sox needed. Breslow got his controllable middle of the order bat and an upgrade at catcher in one fell swoop, added an elite reliever to add to Boston's already nasty bullpen, and added outfield depth and another right-handed bat to balance the bench.

While this deadline can only be viewed as successful in Boston, especially when factoring in that it added Curtis Mead too, it will have a trickle-down effect. Some players on the roster and in the organization will benefit from moves made, or not made, on deadline day; others, not so much.

4 players who benefitted from the deadline day deals

Trevor Story

The veteran shortstop walks away from the deadline a clear beneficiary, not because of what was done, but because of what wasn't. All the talk leading up to the deadline pointed to the Sox looking to upgrade at shortstop, which would have pushed Story off of his natural position. Nothing ever materialized for Boston (or anyone across the league because none of the big-name shortstops were traded), meaning once Story is healthy, he'll be able to step back into the six hole.

Franklin Arias

For the same exact reason, Arias also benefited massively. While it was likely he would have been moved in a trade for a premier shortstop, the Red Sox thought it better to keep him around. The biggest thing he benefits from is Marcelo Mayer being traded away. Mayer was Arias' biggest competition for shortstop of the future in Boston, but he is now a member of the San Francisco Giants. That leaves the 20-year-old's path unblocked once he is ready for his big league call-up.

Aroldis Chapman

Chapman's role was never going to be affected by the dealings Boston made at this deadline, but adding Erik Miller means he will get extra rest and less usage out of the ninth inning. For the past two seasons, the Red Sox have deployed Chapman in the eighth inning when they felt they needed their best lefty, even if a save situation was coming in the ninth. By adding Miller, he can now fill those responsibilities, giving Chapman less on his plate and more chances to climb the all-time saves leaderboard.

The Pitching Staff

Adley Rutschman has been credited as a player who works well with a pitching staff since his call-up. While Narváez and Connor Wong are no slouches behind the plate in that area, adding a three-time All-Star and elite defender should only add confidence to the entire staff and help them down the stretch of the season.

2 players who did not benefit from the Red Sox's deadline deals

Jarren Duran

The Red Sox left fielder is going to get some of his playing time usurped by Eli White. White will likely play against lefties going forward, and with Jahmai Jones also on the bench, he likely won't get many pinch-hit opportunities either. White also becomes the backup center fielder now, a role Duran had filled when Rafaela needed a rest.

Romy Gonzalez

Boston acquired three position players on deadline day in Rutschman, White and Rogers. Rutschman is injured and doesn't currently count to the 26-man roster, and they sent Carlos Narváez back to Baltimore, meaning they had one extra player. Gonzalez ended up being the odd man out.

The utility infielder really struggled after being rushed through his rehab assignment, hitting .185 with a .572 OPS in 19 games. Though not fully his fault, he wasn't able to get his timing right at the plate and it has resulted in him being sent to Worcester to make room. Gonzalez has been a key contributor the last two seasons, so it's unlikely we've seen the last of him, but for now he is one of the big losers of the deadline.
