September call-ups are a fun time for fans to see young players get a shot in the majors or journeymen get extra in-game reps to try and prove their worth. In the past, Boston Red Sox fans have been treated to Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela making their MLB debuts. This year's fans are anticipating a potential debut for the Red Sox No. 1 prospect, Franklin Arias.
The thing about the expanded roster is that it means that more players need to share playing time. The Red Sox this year also find themselves in a different predicament where the expanded roster spots will likely go to players returning from injury. The Sox have Trevor Story, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Roman Anthony all coming back from injuries within the next two weeks. Curtis Mead may also be back before the end of the season. 3 Red Sox who could lose playing time when rosters expand in September
Anthony Siegler
Tony Seagulls has become the team's hype man, but his playing time has been waning lately with the emergence of Nick Sogard. With the returns of Kiner-Falefa and Story, the Red Sox are going to be hard-pressed to find playing time for the second baseman. Some may think he'll get optioned, but he has been excellent for the vibes of the team, and sometimes it's worth keeping a player like that around. He may just not see the field very often, though.
Jovani Morán
When rosters expand, teams are allowed to add one pitcher and one hitter. The Red Sox currently have three left-handed relievers on their 40-man roster in the minors: Raymond Burgos, Eduardo Rivera, and Tyler Samaniego. When one of them comes up, they'll take some of Morán's relief appearances away. That might be a good thing, though, because Morán hasn't looked sharp recently, and getting him some extra rest before the playoffs could be extremely helpful.
Jarren Duran
When Roman Anthony returns, he'll certainly eat into some of Duran's playing time, but the Red Sox have another player on the 40-man who has been red hot in the minors recently: Kristian Campbell. The former top prospect seems to finally have found his form again, and September might be the perfect time for him to get that second chance. The thing is, he's going to be an outfielder and DH, the same exact thing Anthony and Duran will be doing, meaning Duran's playing time will be cut even more to get him reps.
