Jason Varitek surprises fan wearing his jersey in heartwarming video

They say never meet your heroes, but if your hero is Jason Varitek, you might want to disregard that.

On Tuesday, Varitek’s wife Catherine shared a sweet clip of the Boston Red Sox legend casually introducing himself to a fan named Jeff, whom they spotted wearing his shirsey at Canobie Lake Park.

It took Varitek actually introducing himself for Jeff to realize what was going on, which made the whole interaction even sweeter. And according to Jeff’s brother-in-law, he was over the moon about the chance encounter:

"“You guys made his day. He was still in shock when I saw him a few minutes later!”"

The Sox’ most recent captain – and only the fourth in franchise history since 1923 – Varitek spent his entire big-league career in Boston from 1997-2011. He was instrumental in the first two World Series championships since Reversing the Curse (2004, 07), was a three-time All-Star, and won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger. In retirement, he’s served as a special assistant and is now a member of Alex Cora’s coaching staff.

He’s also, as evidenced by this video, one of Boston’s most beloved figures, especially because he remains entrenched in the team. And nothing says summer in New England like spending a Sox off-day at Canobie Lake Park.
