Boston Red Sox prospect Pedro Castellanos promoted to Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox made a bunch of moves earlier on Friday, with a number of prospects moving up from Low-A to High-A and from High-A to Double-A. Now we’re seeing someone make the jump from Double-A to Triple-A. According to SoxProspects on Twitter – unsurprisingly, that someone is Pedro Castellanos.

Castellanos is slashing .279/.303/.463 with 18 doubles, one triple, and eight home runs this season. He’s driven in 42 runs and scored 23 more. Those are already fantastic numbers that would warrant consideration for a promotion. However, it’s what he’s done recently that really made headlines.

The right-handed hitter entered the month of May with a .116/.171/.217 slash line. Nothing was going right for him. He slashed .333/.351/.600 in May though and is slashing a ridiculous .358/.369/.519 this month.

That two-month stretch has seen Castellanos as one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball. We’re not talking bloops either. When he hits the ball, it’s with a purpose. 100-plus MPH off the bat or it probably wasn’t actually swung at by Castellanos.

The 24-year-old has put together a strong MiLB career that has seen him improve in a few areas over the years. He plays first base and the corner outfield. And while he isn’t exactly fast, he moves well enough for the positions. His defense is solid. Nothing insane but he gets the job done. And he has a pretty solid arm for the corner outfield spots (and way more than enough for first base).

It will be interesting to see what this means for Castellanos. Obviously, the move was partly due to the promotions of Stephen Scott and Alex Binelas to Double-A. Free up space for them to play at the new level. But Castellanos also 100% deserved this promotion. So it’s exciting to see how much we get to see of him and at what positions.

Now that he’s in Triple-A, Pedro Castellanos is just one stop from the Boston Red Sox. Could he make an impact in the Majors at some point this season? It’s certainly not impossible. We’ll have to see what he can do at this level first. But if he continues to be one of the hottest hitters in baseball, that MLB debut could be on the horizon.
