Boston Red Sox players show their support for the Celtics

Green was the theme for the Boston Red Sox as they traveled to Chicago for a road trip that begins in Chicago this week. The players made the trip decked out in Boston Celtics gear in support of their fellow athletes ahead of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Red Sox Twitter account shared a video and photos of players leaving Fenway Park following Sunday’s win against the Seattle Mariners, which capped a four-game sweep. Many of them wore a Celtics jersey or a team-themed tee-shirt. Some players even wore the full uniform with basketball shorts.

Marcus Smart was a popular choice for those wearing a jersey and the Defensive Player of the Year noticed.

Franchy Cordero was the hero of the day after hitting a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning. Apparently, Smart was watching the game and gave Cordero a shout out on Twitter while showing his appreciation for sporting his jersey.

The Celtics point guard also thanked fellow Texas-native Trevor Story for his support by retweeting a photo of the Red Sox second baseman wearing his jersey. Smart made reference to Story’s recent home run binge, which included a three-homer game last week and a grand slam the following night. Story added another home run on Sunday that helped the Red Sox get to extra-innings for Cordero’s heroics.

Clearly, Smart has been paying attention to the Red Sox this season.

The Celtics host the Miami Heat for Game 4 on Monday night at 8:30 p.m. EST. The teams split the first two games in Miami but Boston lost Game 3 on their own turf.

The Celtics actually outscored the Heat in each of the final three quarters but it wasn’t enough to overcome a brutal start that saw them trailing by 21 points at the end of the first quarter. A whopping 23 turnovers and an ice cold shooting performance from Jayson Tatum (3-for-14) certainly didn’t help.

Smart briefly exited Game 3 after rolling his ankle. He managed to fight through the pain to return but he’s currently being listed as Questionable for tonight’s game, as is center Robert Williams, who missed the previous game with knee soreness. The Celtics will need both of these elite defensive players to contain the Heat.

As for the Red Sox, they are heading to Chicago for a quick three-game road trip before returning home to host the Baltimore Orioles this weekend. The Red Sox are riding a major league best five-game winning streak and have won eight of their last 10 games. That’s right, the team that many people wanted to count out of the race in April has the best record in baseball over the past 10 games.

Hopefully some of that success will rub off on the Celtics with the support from their fellow Boston athletes. The C’s are going to need it to avoid the brink of elimination.
