After a tremendous Game 3 in which the Red Sox hit their third grand slam in their last 11 innings as well as a trio of home runs, and Eduardo Rodriguez dominated for six innings, Boston holds a 2-1 lead in the ALCS.

They’ve defied the odds all season long, so why stop now?

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nick Pivetta

Nick Pivetta stepped up in a big way during the ALDS, and the Red Sox need him to do so again tonight.

While the former Phillie had a 4.53 ERA in the regular season, he appears to be one of those postseason workhorses, not unlike Nathan Eovaldi.

Pivetta has pitched a total of 8 2/3 innings between Games 1 and 3 of the ALDS. In Game 3, he pitched the 10th inning, holding the Rays down long enough for the Boston bats to wake up and walk it off in the 13th inning. As such, he had to forgo his scheduled Game 4 start last week, and this will be his first career postseason start.

During the regular season, Pivetta made one start against the Astros, going six innings, and allowing two earned runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out nine. It was one of three games in which he struck out nine or more batters.

Over 48 total plate appearances, Astros batters have slashed .214/.271/.333 with a .604 OPS against Pivetta.

The Astros will haul out former Cy Young righty Zack Greinke. Now in the 18th year of his career, he’s not exactly the force he once was.

In the regular season, he posted a 4.16 ERA over 30 games (29 starts), almost identical to his 4.18 career postseason ERA over 20 games.

Greinke has made one postseason appearance thus far, a scoreless relief inning in Game 3 of the ALDS. Hopefully, he’ll be rusty.
