The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees play Tuesday night for all the marbles, meeting for the first time in the Wild Card game.

While the Red Sox are playing in their first-ever Wild Card game, the Yankees are old pros at this.

But what should fuel the Red Sox fire is that before Game 162 of the regular season, when the Blue Jays and Mariners were still in the race and a wild four-game scenario was in play, the Yankees were going to be able to choose who they went to play in a Game 163 tiebreaker. Given the choice between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Sox, the Yankees chose their longtime rivals, meaning they thought the Sox would be easier to dispatch.

“We want Boston” worked out really well for them in 2018. Let’s make them regret their existence again tonight…

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

Nathan Eovaldi got rocked by the Yankees last time he faced them, but prior to that, had been their nightmare all season. In his first five starts against them, he had a 2.05 ERA.

The former Yankee has a 3.75 ERA over 32 starts this season, with a career-high 195 strikeouts over 182 1/3 innings. This season, he has a 3.47 ERA in 19 games at home, and a 4.21 ERA in 13 away games.

Over 22 1/3 career innings in the postseason, Nasty Nate has a 1.61 ERA over six games. Fans will recall him stepping up and pitching in relief in each of the first three World Series games in 2018.

Eovaldi will face off against Gerrit Cole, with the Yankees hoping for a repeat of their last matchup. Cole has a 3.23 ERA over 30 starts, with 243 strikeouts over 181 1/3 innings. Like Eovaldi, Cole’s numbers were better at home (3.11 ERA) than on the road (3.32).

Cole faced the Sox four times during the regular season, and gave up at least one earned run in each start, and at least three earned runs in three of four. He has a lifetime 3.81 ERA against the Red Sox in the regular season, and they’ve hit .252/.292/.438 with a .730 OPS against him.

Between 2013-2020, Cole has pitched in 13 postseason games, including the Wild Card game in both the NL and AL. Overall, he has a 2.68 ERA over 84 innings, though he has allowed at least one earned run in each of his last five postseason starts dating back to the 2019 World Series.

The key for the Sox in this game is to get to Cole early and shatter his confidence, as they did in the game in which Kiké Hernández hit a leadoff home run against him.

Red Sox Starting Lineup

Red Sox vs Yankees Prediction Today

I’m picking the Red Sox. Rafael Devers is going to continue to be a young Yankee Killer and homer off Cole yet again, and Nasty Nate will put his postseason heroics on display.
