Viral video of Red Sox fan spitting on someone at an Orioles game is at least five years old

A disgusting video is going viral of a female Red Sox fan at Oriole Park at Camden Yards spitting on a man after she was told she was sitting in the wrong seat.

The woman’s actions are reprehensible, but it’s unclear why this video has surfaced now, seeing as it’s at least five years old.

At the very end of the video, you can clearly hear Matt Wieters’ name announced as he steps up to bat. Wieters has not played for the Orioles since 2016 and has not played for an MLB team since September 2020.

Numerous media outlets are inaccurately reporting on the viral Red Sox fan video

Despite the context clues, numerous outlets including the New York Post reported this incident as being current, framing the incident as a public safety issue given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That’s irresponsible journalism, especially given how easy this is to fact-check.

There are bad apples in every sports fanbase, and as such, incidents like these happen, though they absolutely should not. Earlier this summer, former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek’s wife Catherine said that a Yankees fan spit on her daughter leaving Yankee Stadium. In May, CBS Philly reported about the fan who dumped popcorn on Russell Westbrook and the New York Knicks fan who was banned from Madison Square Garden for spitting on Trae Young.

The behavior displayed in this video is inexcusable, and should absolutely be punished, and it’s commendable that the person she spit on did not completely lose his mind.

Hopefully, the woman was caught and banned from the ballpark. However, to paint any Red Sox fans from this week’s Orioles series as engaging in such behavior is factually inaccurate.
