The Red Sox embarrassed themselves on Tuesday night, no way to sugarcoat it.

Getting swept by the Yankees was rough, but at least they’re a formidable opponent; the Orioles have lost 100+ games in each of the last three full MLB seasons. To lay down and die at Camden Yards the way the Sox did in the series opener is unacceptable behavior for a team that is supposed to be fighting for a Wild Card spot.

Ahead of Wednesday’s slate of games, the Yankees have a two-game lead for the top Wild Card spot, the Red Sox hold the second, the Mariners are half a game back, and the Jays are a full game behind.

The Sox are stuck between a rock and a hard place; every Yankees victory over the Blue Jays keeps the Blue Jays from overtaking the Sox, but it also moves the Yankees further from the Sox in the Wild Card standings. A great solution to that problem would be for the Red Sox to simply win their own games.

Red Sox vs Orioles Odds Today

The Red Sox are heavily favored on the moneyline tonight, though that hasn’t stopped them from gift-wrapping games for their opponents all weekend. They’re -270 (bet $270 to win $100) to the Orioles +215 (bet $100 to win $215).

The spread has Boston -2.5 and Baltimore +2.5, both at -115 (bet $115 to win $100).

If you’re into betting on runs, the over/under tonight is 9.5, with the over and under both set at -110 (bet $110 to win $100).

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

The Red Sox will send out their other ace for the penultimate game of the series, not that Chris Sale’s start was the problem last night.

Nathan Eovaldi will make what is likely his final start of the year, and he has been largely excellent in 2021. He has a 3.88 ERA over 31 starts and 176 1/3, the most games and innings pitched in a season since his career-high 33-start, 199 2/3-inning season with Miami in 2014. In fact, this is only his second season with 30+ starts.

Eovaldi is coming off a nightmare game against the Yankees in which he allowed seven earned runs in only 2 2/3 innings. He had been excellent in five against them to that point, but inexplicably crumbled against them.

In two prior starts against the Orioles, Eovaldi has been solid, a 3.48 ERA over 10 1/3 innings, with four earned runs allowed. One of those games was way back on Opening Day, and he allowed one earned run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Orioles will send out Zac Lowther, who made his debut on April 25 and has a 7.66 ERA over nine games this year, including five starts. Of course, the Orioles used multiple pitchers on Tuesday night with sky-high ERAs, and the lifeless Sox bats did absolutely nothing against them.
