This is it, folks. The Big Kahuna. The end-all-be-all. It’s Red Sox and Yankees at Fenway Park for the final homestand of the season, with both teams vying for a Wild Card spot.

Are you not entertained?

Admittedly, the Rivalry has been somewhat stale over the last decade or so, but this series feels like vintage Rivalry, especially with the caliber of pitching tonight. Because not only are the two teams still in it, but the series will open with Nathan Eovaldi and Gerrit Cole facing off, two potential American League Cy Young pitchers, hurling those white spheres until their arms fall off.

This will also be the first time former teammates and trade deadline acquisitions Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo. It will be interesting to see who helps their team more this weekend.

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

Nasty Nate will open the series against the Cole Train.

Eovaldi has a 3.58 ERA over an AL-leading 30 starts, the second-most of his career. He also leads the AL in FIP (2.72) and all of MLB in walks-per-nine (1.7). He has 188 strikeouts and 32 walks issued over 173 2/3 innings. This is his first 100+ inning season for the Sox, and he has been absolutely crucial to their success. I think a lot of people expected Eduardo Rodriguez to be the star of the rotation this season, but it has been Eovaldi, without a doubt.

The good news is that Eovaldi has absolutely owned the Yankees this year, while Cole has struggled against the Sox. Nate the Great has a 2.01 ERA over five starts against his former team, with 34 strikeouts and only two walks issued in 31 1/3 innings. Four of the seven earned runs he’s allowed to Yankees batters have been home runs, so hopefully, he can minimize long balls tonight.

Cole has a 3.03 ERA over 28 starts in his first full Yankees season. It’s his highest ERA since 2017, but he leads the AL in wins (outdated stat), complete games (2), strikeouts-per-nine (12.3), and SO/W (6.08). His 231 strikeouts are fourth-most in MLB, behind Zack Wheeler (240), Robbie Ray (238), and Max Scherzer (232).

Over nine career starts against Boston, Cole has a 3.74 ERA with 22 earned runs allowed over 53 innings. But this season, he has a 5.06 ERA over three starts, with nine earned runs allowed over 16 innings, including four home runs. The Sox are slashing .292/.342/.538 with a .881 OPS against him, the highest OPS by any team he’s faced more than once.
