After Tuesday night’s 6-3 victory over the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox have won six in a row.

Their time at Fenway this season is winding down; after Wednesday night’s game against the Mets, they’ll have a day off on Thursday before hosting the New York Yankees for the final home series of the season.

After that, it’s the Orioles and Nationals to round out the season, and hopefully, go on to play in their first-ever Wild Card game.

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Chris Sale

Chris Sale will go up against the Mets for the first time since September 2018. Last time, he faced Jacob deGrom, who once homered off him in college. Tonight, he’ll go up against Taijuan Walker.

Sale has a 2.40 ERA over six starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. He’s struck out 31 batters and issued six walks over 30 innings, but has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a game. His last start was a five-inning gem against the Orioles in which he only allowed one earned run on two hits and did not issue a walk. The only cause for concern is that he only struck out one batter. Since his first season with the Red Sox in 2017, Sale has only had two other games in which he only had one strikeout.

This will be Sale’s third career game against the Mets, and he has a 2.45 ERA against them over 11 innings, with 14 strikeouts and only two walks. Their lineups hit .143/.184/.257 with a .441 OPS against him in the past.

Walker was an All-Star for the first time this year, but has struggled immensely in the second half. His 4.27 ERA on the season is his highest since 2015 and the second-worst of his career.

The Mets righty has also faced Boston twice, but they fare a lot better against him than the Mets do against Sale. Sox batters hit .293/.326/.390 with a .716 OPS against Walker, though he does have a 1.69 ERA against them over 10 2/3 total innings.

But Walker has struggled to keep opponents off the board all summer. His last scoreless start was back on May 29, and he has a 5.44 ERA in 18 starts since. Since the beginning of August, he’s allowed three or more earned runs in five of eight starts. The way the Red Sox have been hitting lately, that could continue tonight.

Red Sox vs Mets Prediction Today

Every game is a must-win for the Sox, who are currently holding a 1.5-game lead in the AL Wild Card race. Walker has been giving away earned runs like they’re Halloween candy, and with the Red Sox dressed up in their finest City Connect uniforms, it’s time to trick-or-treat.
