If you went to sleep at a normal hour, the Red Sox pulled off a win with the simple yet bold strategy of scoring a lot of runs. Big fan of that, hope they do it again.

With the Blue Jays and Yankees both losing on Tuesday, the three AL East teams are in a tie for the first Wild Card, which is definitely how we all saw this season going. The A’s and Mariners are also vying for Wild Cards, so a Red Sox win today would be a double whammy.

The 82-65 Sox will cap off this Mariners series with a Wednesday day game

The spread has Boston -1.5 at +130 (bet $100 to win $130) and Seattle +1.5 at -150 (bet $150 to win $100).

If you prefer to bet on runs, the over/under today is 8.5, with both the over and under at -110 (bet $110 to win $100).

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Tanner Houck

On the one-year anniversary of his MLB debut, Tanner Houck will pitch once again.

The 24-year-old former first-round pick has been nicknamed the Righty Chris Sale, and has a 3.54 ERA over 13 games (11 starts) at the big-league level this year.

Houck has never faced the Seattle Mariners, but he does have a 1.40 career ERA over five starts in September. His first start of the month was a scoreless five-inning dazzler, but in Chicago over the weekend, he was tagged for three earned runs on four hits in just 3 2/3 innings.

Houck will go up against Marco Gonzales, who’s been in the game for seven years already. He has a 4.03 ERA over 21 starts this season, his worst mark since 2017.

Gonzales doesn’t strike out a lot of batters, only 88 over 118 1/3 innings. His strikeout rate is down, his walks rate is more than doubled from last year, and he’s allowing more hits and home runs; his FIP, which basically measures how effective he is at holding down the offense, has increased from 3.32 in 2020 to 5.38.

Red Sox vs Mariners Prediction Today

The Red Sox really should win this game. Houck will likely go five innings, depending on his pitch count and effectiveness.

I think it’ll be closer than last night’s/this morning’s 8-4 victory, but still a win.
