The Red Sox return to Fenway somewhat triumphant, which is not what I thought I’d be saying at the beginning of the week.

Despite having a massive COVID outbreak that absolutely pulverized the roster, the Red Sox managed to split the four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays and finish the road trip 4-3. Managing to take two games from the Rays is an achievement in itself, but doing so without so many key players feels like an October win.

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

Nasty Nate actually rebounded from a rough August 6 start to have a great month. In his remaining four starts, he had a 1.85 ERA over 24 1/3 innings, with 30 strikeouts and only two walks.

Eovaldi and Cal Quantrill already faced each other last week, so we’ve got a good idea of what this looks like.

In their last face-off, Eovaldi went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk, and the Sox won 5-3. Quantrill wasn’t the reason his team lost; he went seven innings for the second game in a row, and only allowed one earned run and one unearned on six hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Quantrill is the son of former pitcher Paul Quantrill, who made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 1992, and spent two and a half seasons in Boston before being traded to the Phillies.

The younger Quantrill made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2019, and was a part of the Mike Clevinger/Greg Allen trade. He’s pitched both in the rotation and in various bullpen roles. This season, he has a 2.93 ERA over 35 games (17 starts). He began the season as a setup man and middle relief arm, but moved to the rotation permanently in June.

Like Eovaldi, Quantrill isn’t a big strikeout pitcher, but he’s effective. Since moving to the rotation, he only has two games in which he’s struck out more than six batters, though both games came in August, which suggests he is ramping up as he becomes more set as a starter.

In six August starts, Quantrill had a 1.42 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 38 innings and only allowed six earned runs. He also hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs since June 30, and had three shutout starts last month.

It’s shaping up to be a pitcher’s duel at Fenway.

Red Sox vs Indians Prediction Today

After the last month, and especially the last week, the Red Sox have quite a chip on their shoulder. The last two games have given them a burst of momentum and adrenaline that should hopefully carry over into Fenway Friday.
