The good news is that we survived one of the most frustrating Augusts the Boston Red Sox have had in recent history.

The bad news is that with the onslaught of COVID cases, it doesn’t look like September is going to be much better.

But Red Sox fans love two things: when the team wins, and when they can complain about the team. It’s who we are!

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Chris Sale

This sounds insane, but it’s 100% true:

Chris Sale has not pitched in September since 2018.

Cue the ‘World Series back on!’ jokes.

Prior to his heralded return from Tommy John in August, Sale had not pitched in a big-league game since August 13, 2019.

In four starts in September 2018, Sale had a 3.75 ERA over 12 innings. You’ll recall that by September of that historic season, the Red Sox pretty much had things locked up. They were the first team to clinch a postseason berth in early September, and they solidified their third straight division title days later. Cora kept Sale – who had been injured throughout the summer and had only pitched once in August – on a light schedule, and he never pitched deeper than 4 2/3 innings in the final month of the regular season. If you’ve forgotten how that played out, type “Final out of the 2018 World Series” into YouTube.

But I digress because memory lane has been much more fun than focusing on the current struggles of this team. Since making his return in August, Sale has a 2.35 ERA over the small sample size of three starts. He’s actually been getting ample run support from his team, which is one of the only good developments for them in August.

Sale has gone five or more innings, has struck out at least five batters, and has thrown at least 71 pitches in each game since returning. Here’s to more of that, please.
