The Boston Red Sox need a win. Or several.
Beating up on the Baltimore Orioles could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
With Chris Sale coming back on Saturday, this weekend is going to be huge for the Sox in more ways than one. Even though the Orioles have been terrible this year yet again, this series is crucial for Boston. They need to win this series – really, they need to sweep – to gain some confidence.
If you can’t beat these birds, who can you beat?

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nick Pivetta
Nick Pivetta is on the mound against Spenser Watkins.
Pivetta’s ERA is actually slightly higher than Watkins. The former has a 4.34 over 22 starts this year. He’s struck out 131 batters over 118 1/3 innings, but has also issued 50 walks, and will likely set a new career-high in that category this year.
In his last start, Pivetta was excellent: six scoreless innings, one hit, one walk, and five strikeouts. It was a much-needed turnaround from his previous four starts, in which he’d allowed at least three earned runs in each, and only made it out of the fifth inning once.
Pivetta has pitched against the Orioles five times in his career, and has done an excellent job of holding down their bats: a .193/.267/.349 slash line, .615 OPS, 35 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings, only 11 earned runs.
Watkins made his big-league debut at the beginning of July, so he’s never faced the Red Sox, as the two teams haven’t met since May. The rookie was pitching in excellent form over his first four big-league games (1.65 ERA, 16 1/3 IP, 3 ER total), but has struggled in his last three games, allowing four earned runs in each of his starts dating back to July 27.
Sorry to this rookie, but the Red Sox need to light him up tonight.

The Orioles are 31 games out of first, and the only team in MLB with a worse record is the Diamondbacks. You have to beat this team.
Also, I’m going to this game, so they better win.
