The Boston Red Sox are in a rough state: they’re 3-7 in their last ten games and have dropped out of first place, now 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, with the New York Yankees inching closer.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to be an easy weekend to right the ship, as they head to Toronto for the first time since 2019 to face the white-hot Blue Jays for four games, including a doubleheader on Saturday.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Odds Today

The Blue Jays are -150 on the moneyline (bet $150 to win $100), and the Red Sox are +120 (bet $100 to win $120).

The spread has the Sox at +1.5 at -165 (bet $165 to win $100), while the Jays are -1.5 at +130 (bet $100 to win $130).

If you’re into betting the total amount of runs, the over/under is 9.5 runs tonight. It’s +110 on the over (bet $100 to win $110) and -130 on the under (bet $130 to win $100).

Red Sox Pitcher Today

Nathan Eovaldi is on the bump tonight against Alek Manoah.

Nasty Nate has a 3.71 ERA over 21 starts this season, and is coming off one of his worst starts of the season, in which he allowed five earned runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Rays. His ERA hasn’t been below 3.63 since the end of April, and he’s allowed four or more earned runs in seven of his starts, including two July starts in which he allowed five earned runs apiece.

Two things to look forward to in tonight’s start:

  1. Eovaldi has gone five or more innings in all but two games this season, and after Thursday’s debacle of a bullpen game, the Sox need him to do it again.
  2. The Sox lineups are averaging 5.13 runs of support in Eovaldi’s starts, so hopefully, the offense picks him up tonight. They’ve only scored nine runs in four games so far this month, while their pitching has allowed sixteen. Tonight would be a great time for the bats to reawaken.

Manoah made his MLB debut on May 27 and has a 2.47 ERA over nine starts this season. He’s already faced the Sox once on June 14, and held them to one earned run on four hits over six innings. Eovaldi was his opposition in that game as well, and pitched a shutout gem, only allowing three hits and a walk over 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

In July, Manoah posted a 1.02 ERA over 17 2/3 innings (across three starts) and struck out 23 batters. Two of his three starts were seven-inning shutouts, including his most recent game on July 31. Like Eovaldi, he also averages 5+ runs of support, so this game will either be a pitcher’s duel or a derby.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Prediction Today

The Red Sox have been incapable of driving in runs (the rotation collapse certainly hasn’t helped) lately, while the Blue Jays have been absolutely electric since returning to Toronto last weekend; they’ve only lost one of the seven games they’ve played at Rogers Centre. They’ve outscored their opponents 35-18 over that span, including winning two shutouts.

While it could certainly get worse before it gets better, I have this weird feeling that the Red Sox are absolutely over playing like hot garbage in the sun and will finally fight back tonight. Hope springs eternal, after all.
