The Red Sox remain in the thick of the race for Marcus Semien
The market for former Oakland Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien seems to be picking up steam after a slow start. According to MLB Insider Jim Bowden of CBS Sports, the Red Sox, along with the Phillies, Reds, and his former team the Athletics are involved in negotiations with the former 2019 MVP finalist.
In his fantastic 2019 campaign, Semien batted a stunning .285, with 33 home runs, and 92 runs batted which resulted in being named to the All-MLB second team. His stardom was a large reason for Oakland’s success, leading the team to a record of 97-65.
The belief is that Semien’s versatility has intrigued these clubs which is why there has suddenly become a competitive market for him. The versatility is exactly why a team like the Red Sox would be involved as it would be an instant spark to their roster if they can sway Semien their way.
His above-average defense earned him two Gold Glove finalist honors in both 2018 and 2019. It is obvious he will not be playing his normal position at shortstop and would be moving to second base, as the team seems likely to keep Michael Chavis at first base. The Sox haven’t had a consistent defender at two-bagger since Dustin Pedroia was a healthy and reliable starter. This signing would create a fantastic duo up the middle with both Semien and Xander Bogaerts.
Despite Semien’s down year in 2020, only batting .223, with 7 home runs, and 23 RBI, he still looks to be destined for a healthy payday. As it was difficult for a lot of players around the league, Semien failed to catch any sort of rhythm at the plate in a shortened 60-game season.
However, he caught fire when it counted batting a lethal .533 in the 2020 postseason to go along with a homer in four games. His emergence in the playoffs showed us that he is still a great threat as a hitter and would be an excellent addition to an already potent lineup.
If the Red Sox believe that this is worth the move, then do not be surprised if the team attempts to be aggressive to get a deal done as the market for the 30-year-old will most likely only grow. It is time for Boston to finally put their money down on the table and grab themselves a high-caliber type of player and Marcus Semien is just that.
