The Boston Red Sox are set to get a boost to their starting rotation as veteran southpaw David Price is set to make his return from the IL on Sunday.

We’ve hit the most critical part of the season Red Sox Nation and we’re about to get a boost just at the right time. With the starting rotation in need of a serious jolt, they’re just days away from getting hit by a bolt of lightning. It was made official that David Price will be making his way back to the active roster on Sunday and most importantly, the starting lineup.

Boston has been beaten and battered for weeks and with the season coming to an end very soon, it’s time they fire the engines on all cylinders. Price has been on the IL for three weeks now thanks to a cyst on his wrist. It was believed that his up and down performances could be attributed to the cyst. Thanks to some rehab and treatment it appears as if Price is ready to get back on the mound.

If the Red Sox want any shot at the postseason they’re going to need Price not only back in the rotation but he needs to be lights-out. If Boston can get outings similar to those we saw from the lefty in 2018, then that Wild Card deficit will begin to shrink. Getting Price back into action right when the Sox need him the most could also fire up the rest of the pitching staff creating a swell of momentum.

"“It’s important,” Cora said. “This is a guy who, when he gets on a roll and he’s healthy, he’s one of the best lefties in the league. Obviously, we didn’t like that he missed time but it might help him out to finish strong and help us go where we want to go. He looks good, he’s in good spirits and he’s healthy.”"

Having David back also allows the Red Sox to eliminate one of their miserable bullpen games, it also allows them to not have to rely on Brian Johnson. It also softens the blow of losing Chris Sale, not by much, but definitely some. Boston now has a four-man starting rotation with the fifth-day being bullpen game.

Price does still have some work to do prior to heading back to the mound for real on Sunday and that comes in the form of bullpen session on Saturday. If Alex Cora and the management staff see what they’re looking for then all things are a go for the big return on Sunday.

The Red Sox are in the fight of their lives in the wild card standings and getting David Price back this weekend is the boost this squad needs right now. Boston’s offense has been firing non-stop and now with Price back the pitching should be able to catch up. Time is running out on this season and having Price make his return just may slow those grains of sand from falling through the hourglass.
