Red Sox suffering from frustrating inconsistencies in 2019

The Red Sox have had an inconsistent 2019. They instill hope and take it right back in what has been frustrating for players, fans, and management.

The Boston Red Sox have had one of their most inconsistent and lukewarm seasons that I can remember in my 15 or so seasons of being a die-hard fan. One of their biggest problems this year has been the inability to win on a consistent basis against any opponent.

The Red Sox can’t gather any momentum at all this season. Inconsistency on both the pitching and hitting end have been an issue. The offense either scores 10+ runs or fewer than three, and the starting rotation either gives you six shutout innings, or two innings and six runs. There’s not very much in between for this ball club.

The same goes for the players. We’ve seen ups and downs from the usual dependable players. Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Chris Sale, and Rick Porcello have all struggled at some point this year and haven’t been themselves.

Their inconsistency is hard to watch as a fan because they give you so much hope, but always let you down. I’ve gotten so used to it that I get mad at myself for wasting my energy on them.

Tuesday night was the perfect example. They let up three runs in the first, their bullpen somehow lets up only one hit over 5 1/3 shutout innings, and they lose 3-2 because they can’t score. *Face in palm.*

At this point, it’s just a trend. It happens all the time. They’ll win two or three in a row, then lose to the Angels in extra-innings, or have the bases loaded against Tampa in the ninth down by one and lose, or win three against the Yankees and lose the final one. The list doesn’t stop. They get you excited just to let you down.

This season, they’ve had just one streak of winning six games or more. In the past three seasons, they’ve had at least three streaks of winning six games or more. It’s all just so blah.

A good analogy for the 2019 Red Sox is a car on fire. You can’t look away, and I don’t think it’s going to blow up until it does. I am still naive and think that that burning car will overcome a six-game deficit and make the second Wild Card spot.

The Red Sox are simply a tease. All the ups and downs (mostly downs) is too frustrating to keep up with. Everybody knows they have the talent to win, but they just can’t do anything with that talent, which is beyond infuriating. The team knows it, the fans know it, and management knows it.

I haven’t quite given up yet, but I’m close. They’re in such mediocre territory that it’s hard to give up hope, but it’s also hard to have hope. Inconsistencies have killed the 2019 Red Sox.
