The series finale between the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals was suspended in the 10th inning. When will they finish?

It’s fitting that in the midst of a discouraging stretch in which the Boston Red Sox are letting their season spiral down the drain, the weather washed away a game they should have put away long before Fenway Park was flooded by a torrential downpour.

Wednesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals was suspended in the top of the 10th inning when severe thunderstorms interrupted a tie ballgame.

Boston had a lead when starter Eduardo Rodriguez exited after five solid innings but the bullpen allowed the Royals to chip away with runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie it up. There’s no telling how long extra-innings would last following a rain delay that wasn’t ending anytime soon, forcing the umpires to call it a night.

There are no ties in baseball so what does this mean for the Red Sox and their place in the standings?

When the game will continue

The game will resume when these teams have a mutual off-day on Thursday, August 22 at 1:05 p.m.

Fans with tickets for last night’s game will be admitted to the ballpark to watch the remainder of this game when it resumes in two weeks.

Where did we leave off?

It’s the top of the 10th inning with the score knotted at four.

Josh Taylor was on the mound and had fallen behind Meibrys Viloria with two balls and a strike. The Red Sox could use a different pitcher to restart the game but then Taylor would no longer be available. Rodriguez, Darwinzon Hernandez, Nathan Eovaldi, and Brandon Workman have already been used in this game.

The Royals could pinch-hit for Viloria but that would mean he can’t return later. Regardless of who is on the mound and at the plate, the Royals will bat with the count 2-1 in their favor.

The lineups should remain relatively the same unless injuries or roster changes make a mess of things in the meantime.

How does this impact the Red Sox schedule?

Boston wraps up a short two-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Fenway on Wednesday, August 21. They won’t need to travel anywhere to make up the remainder of this game so their schedule isn’t disrupted too much. The only concern is that they now won’t have that extra day off to travel to San Diego for a series that weekend.

How does this impact the Royals schedule?

More from Red Sox News

The Royals didn’t have another planned trip to Boston this season but they don’t have to go too far out of their way to accommodate this change. It’s a relatively short trip up from Baltimore after they wrap up a three-game series against the Orioles, then they are off to Cleveland. Boston isn’t exactly on the way but it’s a manageable trip.

Still, you could see why the Royals would be annoyed by having to return to Fenway. They have nothing to play for in a lost season and have to go out of their way to come back here and finish a game that potentially could be over after one more inning.

How does this impact the standings?

Boston’s record doesn’t change yet with this game still undecided but every other team in the playoff race was in action last night.

The Texas Rangers lost to the Cleveland Indians. That drops Texas a full game behind the Red Sox in the Wild Card race while Cleveland moves to nine games ahead of the top Wild Card spot.

Tampa Bay lost so the Red Sox gain half a game on them and now sit six games behind the Rays for the second Wild Card.

Oakland lost so the A’s are now 5.5 ahead of the Red Sox and half a game out of a Wild Card spot.

The Red Sox will gain or lose half a game in the standings depending upon how their meeting with the Royals pans out when they resume play.
