Everything you need to know about how to watch the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.
The Boston Red Sox meet the New York Yankees in the postseason for the first time since 2004. We all remember how that panned out last time. The rivalry is renewed in this year’s American League Division Series.
Boston won a franchise record 108 games to finish with a comfortable eight game lead over the Yankees, securing their third consecutive AL East division title. New York won 100 games yet still had to fight for their playoff lives in a Wild Card game against the Oakland A’s.
Chris Sale takes the mound for the Red Sox in Game 1. The ace missed a significant chunk of the second half with shoulder inflammation and his workload was treated with kid gloves down the stretch. Sale hasn’t lasted longer than five innings in a game since July. While he’s not expected to be under any limitations in this game, his late-season usage and dip in velocity is a concern to keep an eye on tonight.
The Yankees will counter with J.A. Happ. He’s 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA against the Red Sox this year but his last outing against them didn’t go well for the lefty. Boston tagged him for four runs over six innings, including a home run by Steve Pearce. The veteran has owned Happ in his career, going 11-for-32 with six homers against him.
The Red Sox were a major league-best 57-24 at home this season and won seven of ten games against the Yankees at Fenway Park. That includes a four-game sweep in Boston back in August. Two of the Yankees’ wins in Boston came during the final series of the regular season when the Red Sox had already wrapped up home-field advantage and were cruising to the finish line.
Here’s the starting lineup the Red Sox will roll with in Game 1.
