The Greenville Drive, a Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will give away free Burger King Whoppers if Tim Tebow strikes out three times.

While Tim Tebow will always have his fair share of supporters, there remains a large contingency of sports fans that still get a kick out of mocking one of the most polarizing athletes of this generation. A minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox appears to be the latest to have a bit of good-natured fun at his expense.

Tebow has spent time with the New York Mets this spring and the organization recently announced he would be assigned to their Class A affiliate in Columbia.

The Columbia Fireflies share a division in the South Atlantic League with the Greenville Drive, the Class A team in the Red Sox organization. The Drive recently trolled the most famous hitter in Columbia’s lineup with a promotion scheduled for June 13-15 when the Fireflies come to town. Fans in attendance will receive free Whoppers from Burger King if Tebow strikes out three times in a game during the series.

After the former Heisman winner’s NFL career flamed out, Tebow shifted his focus to the baseball diamond. While his tremendous physical gifts seem ideally fit for an athletic career, the collegiate star never possessed the skill set to thrive at the professional level. Most are understandably skeptical that the 29-year old will suddenly learn how to play baseball, a sport that requires more than a chiseled frame and elite athleticism in order to succeed.

Tebow’s brief time in camp with the Mets left little reason to believe he’ll be climbing the minor league ladder anytime soon. He appeared in seven games this spring, hitting .200 with six strikeouts.

His Grapefruit League

debut came against the Red Sox

earlier this month. Tebow went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts and looked woefully over-matched in his first plate appearance against

Rick Porcello

.

Granted, any hitter acclimating to their first spring training would look hopeless against a reigning Cy Young Award winner. The competition in the South Atlantic League won’t be nearly as steep, although Tebow should still prepare for his fair share of whiffs.

Next: Setback could hold Price out until May

Burger King may be home of the Whopper, but the Columbia Fireflies are likely to be the home of a strikeout king. A fiercely competitive athlete, Tebow should eventually improve at the plate, but it’s going to take time. Drive fans looking to attend games against the Fireflies this June should bring their appetites.
