Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox

Final Score: Norfolk Tides 2, PawSox 0

Notable Pitchers:

Jonathan Aro (IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K)

Dayan Diaz (0.1 IP, H, R, 3 BB)

Pat Light (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K)

Henry Owens (6 IP, 5 H, R, BB, 3 K)

  • Owens has been on an excellent run of late and last night’s start just continues that stretch. In fact, Red Sox manager John Farrell went as far to suggest that Owens and Brian Johnson could be in Boston soon. Given that Owens appears to have conquered his control issues (he hasn’t walked more than 2 batters since June 9th) and has developed some command of his curveball, he’s looking more major league ready than ever.

Notable Position Players:

Garin Cecchini (1-3, BB)

Allen Craig (0-3, K)

Marco Hernandez (1-4, K)

Deven Marrero (1-3, BB, K)

Double-A Portland Sea Dogs

Final Score: Trenton Thunder 4, Sea Dogs 2

Notable Pitchers:

Williams Jerez (IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB)

Notable Position Players:

Carlos Asuaje (1-5, 2 K)

Tzu-Wei Lin (0-4, K)

Manuel Margot (0-5, K)

Sam Travis (2-4, 2B, BB, 2 K)

  • Travis was advertised as an advanced bat coming out of Indiana University last year but nobody expected him to be quite this advanced. Travis was playing in Lowell a year ago and is now slashing an impressive .306/.372/.405 in his first 32 games in Portland. Given how aggressively the Red Sox have promoted him thus far, it’s easy to imagine him starting next season in Pawtucket and potentially seeing Boston by the end of the year.

High-A Salem Red Sox

Game One

Final Score: Lynchburg Hillcats 4, Red Sox 0

Notable Pitchers:

Ty Buttrey (3 IP, H, 3 R, ER, 4 BB, 5 K)

  • Buttrey only lasted three innings because of a rain delay that pushed the last six innings of this game from Tuesday night to yesterday. Even considering that, though, this is an unusual start for Buttrey. Normally a groundball pitcher that doesn’t strike out or walk too many hitters, Buttrey did quite a bit of both and also allowed a number of runs despite allowing just a hit. Still, Buttrey is enjoying a strong rebound season in 2015 and is a prospect to watch.

Kyle Kraus (5 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K)

Notable Position Players:

Mauricio Dubon (1-4)

Wendell Rijo (1-4)

Game Two

Final Score: Lynchburg Hillcats 8, Red Sox 2

Notable Pitchers:

Chandler Shepherd (IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 K)

Teddy Stankiewicz (5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K)

  • It would be tough to name someone in the Red Sox organization whose had as up-and-down a season as Stankiewicz. Every strong start appears to be matched by a shaky start, as in last night, and as a result he’s sitting on a mediocre 3.86 ERA thus far. It’s worth wondering how he’ll handle the transition to the upper minors next year.

Notable Position Players:

Mauricio Dubon (1-2, CS)

Wendell Rijo (1-3)

Short Season A Lowell Spinners

Final Score: Spinners 10, Williamsport Crosscutters 7

Notable Position Players:

Luis Alexander Basabe (0-0, 5 BB, SB)

  • Basabe turns in an extremely unusual game here, not recording a single at bat due to walking five times in a game. He’s having an impressive debut season in Lowell and games like this will raise the old OBP as he’s now slashing .269/.364/.485 and showing solid power, patience, and speed in his first taste of Lowell.

Andrew Benintendi (1-5, 2B, K)

Mitchell Gunsolus (1-4, BB, 2 K)

Tate Matheny (2-4, BB, CS)

  • Matheny hasn’t starred in his professional debut, hitting just .222/.288/.278 thus far. However, games like last night will help that line out as he reached base three times, the first time he has done that since signing with the Red Sox.

Gulf Coast League Red Sox

Final Score: Red Sox 3, GCL Orioles 1

Notable Position Players:

Yoan Aybar (2-2, 2B, CS)

  • Aybar was viewed as a breakout prospect by many before the season and he has held true to that in his first go-around in the GCL, hitting .333/.358/.414 through 24 games. Many facets of his game are still raw, as his plate discipline, power, and baserunning skills haven’t quite developed yet. Still, he’s a promising player and, at 18 years old, there’s room to grow.

Devon Fisher (0-2, 2 K)

Trent Kemp (0-3)

Yomar Valentin (0-1)
