Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox

Final Score: Buffalo Bisons 2, PawSox 1

Notable Pitchers:

Edwin Escobar (2 IP, H, 0 R, BB, K)

Heath Hembree (IP, 0 H, 0 R, K)

Notable Position Players:

Jackie Bradley Jr. (0-4, K)

Rusney Castillo (1-3, BB)

  • It’s safe to say that Castillo’s first full season with the Red Sox has not gone according to plan. He has spent most of this season in Pawtucket and a brief stint in Boston was unsuccessful. Worst of all, he hasn’t even been that good in Pawtucket, slashing .282/.337/.389 and hardly proving to be the dynamic power-speed guy that the Red Sox signed to a record deal from Cuba. There’s time for him to turn this around but this performance doesn’t bode well for this contract’s success.

Marco Hernandez (1-4, 3 K)

Double-A Portland Sea Dogs

Final Score: Sea Dogs 10, New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5

Notable Pitchers:

Kyle Martin (1.2 IP, H, 0 R, K)

Simon Mercedes (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, K)

Notable Position Players:

Carlos Asuaje (2-4, BB)

  • Asuaje got off to a great start to this season in Portland and then slumped for a while, but he’s finally getting back on track this month. In July, he has hit .314/.379/.384 and brought his season slash line up to .259/.357/.378 with the Sea Dogs. Asuaje isn’t a guy with a huge ceiling– he’s likely a utility man at best– but he was an 11th round pick and any major league player has value there.

Tzu-Wei Lin (3-5, K)

Manuel Margot (1-6, 2B)

Henry Ramos (2-5)

Sam Travis (2-5, K)

High-A Salem Red Sox

Final Score: Red Sox 9, Wilmington Blue Rocks 4

Notable Pitchers:

Trey Ball (5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K)

  • This is sort of the opposite kind of start that we’ve become accustomed to this season. Whereas Ball has frequently posted stingy starts despite shaky peripherals, last night he put up a mediocre start with great peripherals. This start doesn’t look like much but with regards to long term success, it’s more encouraging than one run and a 2:2 K:BB ratio.

Chandler Shepherd (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K)

Notable Position Players:

Mauricio Dubon (1-5)

Wendell Rijo (1-5)

Low-A Greenville Drive

Final Score: Augusta GreenJackets 8, Drive 3

Notable Pitchers:

Jamie Callahan (2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, BB, 2 K)

Ben Taylor (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, K)

Notable Position Players:

Michael Chavis (1-5, 2 K)

Rafael Devers (0-4, BB)

Javier Guerra (1-4, 2 K)

Nick Longhi (0-5)

Danny Mars (2-3, 2B, BB, SB)

Yoan Moncada (1-4, HR, BB)

  • Moncada has been displaying his elite tools in spades lately and that continued last night as he hit a home run and drew a walk, improving his slash line to .270/.362/.423 on the season. He has been quite impressive of late and should be on his way to Salem before the season’s end.

Short Season A Lowell Spinners

Final Score: Auburn Doubledays 5, Spinners 3

Notable Pitchers:

Jake Cosart (5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K)

  • The Red Sox knew they were drafting a raw arm when they took Cosart out of Seminole State last year in the third round. He has been just that in his professional career thus far, but he has shown flashes of brilliance, none brighter than yesterday. The hard-throwing righty was strong in both results and peripherals and this could be a jump-off point to a strong finish in Lowell.

Notable Position Players:

Victor Acosta (1-4, K)

Andrew Benintendi (1-2, 2 BB)

Tate Matheny (0-5, K)

Austin Rei (1-4, 2B, 2 K)

Tucker Tubbs (0-4)
