Red Sox come from behind to beat the Rays
The Red Sox were losing 8-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday afternoon but they did not go quietly into that good afternoon. They poured on the offense and scored nine runs to pull ahead. They held on to win 11-8.
The Rays were hot right out of the gate. They scored a run in the first inning off of Edward Mujica with some help from a throwing error by Jackie Bradley Jr. Then they tacked on three more runs off Junichi Tazawa in the second inning when Daniel Robertson homered with two guys on base.
The Red Sox got on the board in the sixth inning Jemile Weeks singled in Daniel Nava. Next Jackie Bradley scored on a Quintin Berry ground out.
The Rays tacked on one more run in each inning in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. Things looked pretty bleak for the Sox until Blake Swihart tripled to score Berry and Deven Marrero. Singles from Brock Holt, Nava, and David Chester resulted in three more runs. Nava scored as a result of a fielder’s choice. Chester scored when Berry grounded out. Marrero’s single brought home Bradley. And one more single from Swihart brought in Weeks for the Red Sox’s eleventh run.
Keith Couch pitched his fourth inning of the game for the bottom of the ninth. He earned the win with two ground outs and a strike out.
