Arizona Fall League update: 10/27-11/1

Week four in the Arizona Fall League saw the Surprise Saguaros essentially tread water in the standings. For the Red Sox players it was something of a mixed bag performance-wise. This week saw the Saguaros win two, lose two, and tie one to move to 9-12-1 and remain in second place in the Western Division. The Saguaros’ Western Division also lost the Rising Stars game, 6-2 to the Eastern Division.

Let’s take a look at the numbers for the Red Sox players:

Hitters

Rusney Castillo has left the team due to a bruised thumb sustained on October 20. Castillo was selected to appear in the AFL’s Rising Stars game, but was scratched due to the injury which had not sufficiently healed despite a week and a half of rest. No Red Sox player was chosen to replace him. His offseason future is uncertain at this point.

Sean Coyle was two for 13 for the week, striking out four times but drawing two walks. Coyle is slashing just .178/.267/.315 for the AFL season.

Deven Marrero cooled off somewhat. Marrero was two for eight with two walks thrown in. He still has an active six-game hitting streak. For the AFL season Marrero has slashed.308/.449/.410.

Pitchers

Keith Couch is officially in a slump. Couch surrendered four runs on seven hits in four innings in his one start of the week. Over his last three starts, Couch has permitted 13 runs on 25 hits over 12 innings. His AFL season ERA stands at 6.43.

Aaron Kurcz fared better this week, allowing one run on a solo homer, and one hit while walking two and striking out five in four innings of work. He lowered his AFL ERA to an even 4.00. For the season he has allowed just six hits in nine innings of work while walking six and striking out 11.

Madison Younginer did not pitch this week.

Robby Scott lowered his ERA once again this week, to 0.96. Scott tossed three scoreless innings over two appearances, allowing four hits, striking out four without issuing a walk. He has struck out 10 in 9.1 innings. In the Rising Stars game, Scott struck out the only batter he faced.
