Change is one of the few things in life that you can count on. Injuries in sports are another.

When third baseman Will Middlebrooks was placed on the DL with a calf strain on Sunday, the Sox called up Brock Holt from AAA Pawtucket and started Jonathan Herrera at third.

Less than 24 hours later, the Red Sox add Ryan Roberts to the infield. The 33 year old Texas native played 60 games with the Tampa Bay Rays last season, mostly at second base. In 2012 he predominately played third base with the Arizona Diamondbacks before he was traded to Tampa. He has a career .245 batting average with .392 slugging percentage. Roberts was cut from the Chicago Cubs during spring training this year. The move gives the Red Sox increased depth in the infield.

The move also sends Holt back down to Pawtucket. Roberts appears to have the prerequisite facial hair to fit in with the shaggy members of the Sox. According to ESPN, the tattoo on Roberts’s neck is the Chinese character for “family.” Hopefully he will be a valuable addition to the Sox family.

Tonight the Sox take on the Texas Rangers at 6:10pm in Fenway Park.
